Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Career Advice

I work for a client, we are getting absorbed by IBM. I am in the Dev group. I've been with the co for about 3 years (hired straight from college) - The company is providing guarantees that we'll keep our jobs at least a year. I have a 'soft' opportunity at a small shop (the director of dev noted that he'd love to interview me) - not sure what to do...

Do I stick around or jet? I'd be telecommuting, that's the part that makes the offer attractive. I've saw dozens of layoff posts on FB and here, so I am aware that things are often bad.

What would you do?

I joined IBM through acquisition too. I was offered a reasonably generous bonus if I stayed two years. Looking back I should have cashed that cheque and left as soon as possible after. If you're reasonably experienced you almost certainly find you're paid more than most IBMers so you'll never see a raise until your salary has fallen back into the fold ( I say this as someone who got 3 top ratings and 2 second-to-top ratings in my first 5 years and got nothing). If you're young, like you, it's usual in tech to see some substantial raises in your early years as your experience and value grows. This won't happen in IBM, they simply do not have the freedom in salary budgets. So young or old it's not a good place financially. The current environment is pretty toxic too and has been for a few years. Ultimately only you can decide, but my hindsight would recommend anywhere but IBM.

When they are done with you they will only give you 3 days to find a job. Beat them to the punch.

I worked for a private company and bought out by IBM. IBM gave me 50% of my salary as bonus if I stay at least for one year. But years later, even though I had been alway a top performer getting awards, patents, and so on but never a promotion. You are young so money may be important so as a comparison, at the private company my salary in 10 years increased 75% but at IBM in 10 years only increased 12% so you can see the gap. IBM is no longer the IBM of the 70s or 80s. There is little passion nor enthusiasm left. Everything operates quarter by quarter bottom-line only. So go on interview and find a company that your inputs matter, efforts really make a difference, and you enjoy your work and happy.

Just go to any job's website and type any of the keywords of IBM products versus competitors , you will get the answer.

I would definitely go on the interview. IBM has a terrible track-record when taking over a company. They will cut anything and everything as long as it helps the bottom line. If you stick around you will see that morale will go down the tubes. They only pay the top bosses well and thus you will see management become indifferent to anything and everything that goes wrong.

Leave, definitely. The longer you stay with IBM, the more your skills will atrophy and the less valuable you will be in the marketplace. The ability to telecommute is priceless, and you're less and less likely to have that with IBM.

Continue to interview for as long as you are with IBM. The company has

only one way to go, down. If you get a decent offer, take it.

I would do that interview and any other interviews you can get,

There is only one guarantee if you stick with IBM... you will get laid off.

Do the interview and then decide

Take the interview. You don't have to make a decision until you get an offer. You will have numbers to compare at that point. Interview practice is good in any case.

With 3 yrs work experience out of collega you are an attractive candidate for a new step in your career. IBM career will be very slow with promotions (mostly horizontal), salary increases and then you have the colocation and the permanent lay off threat. I am 18 yrs with IBM and on my way out, but if i had to do it again, I would left 16yrs ago. Jump now. Good luck.

I would leave without hesitation. IBM is not good on a resume these days.

I spent over 20 years at IBM and left last year for a new opportunity, I wish I left years earlier. I arrived when Lou Gerstner took over and even though there were many layoffs back then, most people volunteered for lucrative packages and had retirement plans. Lou did what needed to be done to right the ship. Now, there is so much animosity, poor morale, no investment and lack of direction. There are minimal raises or promotions. If it were me, I would move look into the new opportunity. Wish you luck!
