Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Should Samsung be taken seriously?

Samsung recently announced that it would offer its mobile processor chips to smartphone makers, which could turn it into a formidable competitor to Qualcomm the world's top mobile chipmaker.

Absolutely. Who is QCT going to sell chips to? Already over spend to have minimal market share in premium tier. Reliant on Chinese OEMs in high tier which are now second sourcing, little to no share in low tiers. Please remember to vote white and fill out your Climate survey it is of course anonymous.

I think this is more of a problem for Intel than for Q. If they ever expected to have any customer other than Apple, that hope is pretty much gone now. Making mobile phone modems is freakishly difficult and freakishly expensive, with all those special operator requirements and acceptance tests. Samsung can cross-finance those expenses from their smartphone sales. Intel has to cross-finance from other business units (something that would never even happen at Samsung). So Samsung can always undercut Intel’s prices, and Intel will never be profitable in the business with only one customer. Q on the other hand will always have a technological edge.

All competition should be taken seriously. The Chinese phone makers may decide to diversify their suppliers if trade tension persists.
