Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Walking around the campus today

it feels like we are all sitting in a bus who's engine has long been sold, the wheels are all gone, and the people on board are all sputtering their lips making engine sounds, and rocking back and forth, pretending to go someplace. There is no energy at all, just deep sadness.

I was let go on Tuesday. Tuesday was a tough day but after being out of that corporate HQ and all of it's negative energy I feel so much better I can't even describe it. It's only been 3 days and I feel the difference already. I know looking for another job is not easy but the alternative is to continue working for a dying company an go thru this Russian roulette of jobs and I don't want to do that anymore. Just like the movie "Deer Hunter", eventually a bullet with your name on it is going to come up. Get out now, if you are still there get your resume ready and seriously look for a job. I don't think Sears has more than a year left.

So Eddie’s not putting it in koolaid, it’s the ice cream you need to look out for. I left a few years ago, got a $35k a year boost in pay for the same job I did at sears and the company isn’t run by lunatics. Leave, the only one you’re helping out by stayin is Eddie.

I didn't say that I wasn't looking......just that it isn't as bad as some make it out to be. You have to constantly be looking no matter where you work as no company is loyal to their employees anymore.

I worked for Sears and got laid off half a year go. I took a very long vacation and traveled SE Asia, Australia and South Africa. It was an opportune event for me to do so otherwise I wouldn't have time to do that. Back to work now in the city and it was not that bad of finding a new job. If you don't care about the severance package then you should be looking for a new job now. If you want to have a long paid vacation then sit around waiting for that package and praying they have some left to handout. Those last to leave will not get a dime.

To repeat the poster below --

You don't fully know just how BAD it is until you are OUT of it.

I was let go a year ago in the 400 wave. Before I left it felt empty and sad. Empty cubicles, entire empty floors, Fifth-Third bank leaving, turning the convenience store self-serve, then closing it entirely.

Memories of people sent home for no reason other than Lampert's greed and avarice. Surviving each round of layoffs knowing that your number would soon be up......and your number WILL be up.

The time to get out is NOW. To wait for severance is ridiculous. If Eddie pulls the plug before you get laid off you get nothing.

The good news is that once you are out of that hellish cesspool you feel SO much better. You don't fully know just how bad it is until you are out of it.

Yes you are a much smaller group of associates but don't you wonder who will be the next to go? How does that feel? Two days ago, you had 200 more co workers than you do now. You may feel relief that you were spared or you may feel like it didn't happen because you are special and valued. Unfortunately, I saw on the store/district/market level some folks let go that any functional company would have treasured. But nope. Sent home at the end of the day due to job eliminations.

For heaven's sake, DO NOT stay for 8 or 10 weeks severance pay. Four or five paychecks? You may view it as money you deserve and you deserve it but at what price? There is no guarantee of a job showing up after 8 or 10 weeks or even after unemployment. The time to look is now.

It's always awful when layoffs occur, but I don't feel that way at all. We are a much smaller group of associates now working out of HE which is why they consolidated us. We are just in a huge building. Hopefully they rent out the G and E buildings soon to other companies, so it doesn't feel so huge.

Sounds depressing and like someone said -- just like the stores. Maybe what needs to be done is that everyone leaves.

Just up and leaves HE and the stores. DCs and whatever else too. Turn it back on the company.

People won't do this because of unemployment loss but there should be a federal exception along the lines of you have the right to unemployment if you leave a dying company. Mental health exception.

Good, get rid of the HE trolls and invest in the store.

It's like this after each round I think but the place is starting to feel really empty. The cafeteria is practically a ghost town now.
