Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Bad Day

Today I watch as the goodbye notes all come in. Today is the last day for almost my entire organization. A good team that did good work but someone decided to destroy it. No one told us why. There is no strategy behind it, just a devastating need to cut costs. We, the remaining few, already know our task is hopeless. We cannot possibly continue our proud legacy. Our leaders have not told us which parts of our mission will now be abandoned, so we just shake our heads at the ludicrous list of tasks that will never be finished. For all we know our leaders still expect us to do all that work; we believe yes, they might be that clueless, that deranged. Or maybe they have new plans for us that we will someday hear. No one seems to know. So we sit watching each other wither, wondering if IBM has put a do-not-resuscitate order on all of us.

I wish Ginni would visit my workplace. Oh, I really do. I wish she would do it today so she can see what her grand ideas have done to our company and our lives and our customers and the legacy of the greatest tech corporation in the world. No staff, no spin doctors, no posterior-kissing minions. Just Ginni and a few of us. I really want to know if she has any idea what's going on down here on Earth. I hope she doesn't, because I don't want to contemplate the black soul of a person who would do all this intentionally.

I chose to leave back in 2015.

When I gave notice I had managers I had never heard of begging me to stay.

I told them the truth. I did not trust the company and that the bloodletting would come for me soon enough.

I happily took a 30k reduction in pay to get out. Friends thought I was crazy. I told them the truth. I hated working there.

It was a great decision.

Many people dont have an option to leave?

That's a cop out big time.

Translation: many people at IBM are complacent as pigs in sh!t

An RA would be the best possible thing to happen to those types.

For all of you that are now displaced or left holding the bag ... yes, yesterday was a bod day. Today however is a new day. Embrace it; take a deep breath and take stock of what you'd like to do with the rest of your life and career. I worked at IBM for 5 years; leaving in 2014. I can tell you my journey, to find something new and fulfilling, wasn't exactly easy however I'm much happier and healthier with my new position. I wish nothing but the best for all of you. Reach out to your former colleagues for help and advice.

@TSRGGMY-1rjb not being paid is called slavery if you're forced to do it. Exploitation comes from the asymmetry of power that the company holds over the employees. If employees are not receiving according to their work or needs then they are being exploited. That is literally the definition. This is why we have employment law and trade unions, both of which have been severely reduced over the past two decades thanks to the popular myth that both are bad.

We are back in the situation where people are discarded like waste to ensure that a minority of very wealthy people and institutions have their substantial assets protected. Look at the CEO, on the second largest pay differential to employee earnings in any company.

You don't need to know you are being exploited for it to happen. The current generation of avocado eating, daily latte drinkers, are going to get the same treatment but have even shorter tenure.

Don't think of it in terms of exploitation. Think of it in terms of scorched earth management. The people who gutted the company ostensibly did it as part of a plan to transform it into something new. So what does that look like? What's the next step? Where does IBM go from here? IBM has been in transition for decades and every "strategic initiative" has failed. Employees have been told "hold on a little longer until all is revealed" for so long that no one believes it any more. IBM is spending countless millions of dollars paying people to wait for answers that don't come. Even if employees liked the environment it would still be a suicidal situation.

-1qgm, my point is that these IBM employees cannot claim they are being exploited or being treated badly if there isn't a better job for them available in another company. Let's say that IBM announces tomorrow that it will convert to a model where all employees will be treated as volunteers who will continue to work as usual but will stop receiving a pay check. I guarantee you that all these people, who say they don't have an option to leave, will leave the next day. The reason these people are not leaving now is because, despite how badly IBM is treating them, it still the best best job for them out there. So, they should stop complaining. And, when they can find a better job, they should just leave. That is how a free market works.

Folks this is how the Gerstner “services” transition for IBM ends. Services has run it’s course, and now IBM wants a divorce. Just wave goodbye as it’s going to happen much sooner than you think. IBM has trimmed the excess headcount for at least 2 years now. Does this remind you of any other moves IBM has made (PC’s and PC servers kinda come to mind). Down size until someone says SURE I’ll TAKE the remaining organization at pennies on the dollar. IBM is even as we speak down sizing services so someone can swallow it in one bite. Since System Z is starting to slow down, and since theCFO predicted that 2nd 1/2 will be very poor comps vs last year, you can expect something to happen soon. IBM needs to make the leap of faith and transition. Selling services, and embracing the cloud/as a service model is the way forward (at least according to Ginni) and she needs to execute this ASAP as she is out of runway. ALSO remember this. IBM is very very rarely the leader in a new go to market strategy, THUS they are seen as always being “late”, but once they decide to adopt a new one, they pile in with both feet. IBM is about to pile into the next phase of IBM, It will not be pretty, but it will be with both feet, and it will be as a leaner meaner IBM.

@TSRGGMY-1bpg sounds like exploitation to me, when you treat people badly because you know they have no other options

-1skt, Slavery was abolished in 1865. So, of course, everyone has the option to leave. When one says they don't have an option to leave, what they are really saying is they cannot find another job outside of IBM where they will be better off. If that is the case, such employees should be giving thanks to IBM every day instead of whining about how IBM treats them. After all, it is not like they can get a better deal anywhere else!
