Advice if u were laid off

I was laid off last year and here are some tips I recommend to make things easier for yourself if you just got laid off

  1. Don’t get bitter, but see the layoff as an opportunity and a challenge. There is life and WORK outside of BofA. End things diplomatically for your own sake. You’re a professional.

  2. Remember, your layoff doesn’t define you. You are still that awesome professional you were before you got the news.

  3. If you got a severance package, take some time off and spend it with family and friends. It’s worth it!

  4. Make sure your resume is updated, if you have years of experience resume can be 2 to 3 pages. Recruiters approve of longer resumes.

  5. Even if you’re not looking right away, let recruiters know through LinkedIn or Indeed.com that you’re open to opportunities to see what’s out there and they give great advice on how your resume should look. Pro tip: some recruiters are better than others and there are some who are scammers. Do your research.

  6. File for unemployment, you have that right. They might just pay for your continued education, you never know (professional certification). They did it for me.

  7. Take advantage of your networks. Many times you’ll have a job in no time because of their help.

  8. A layoff for some is like a death, you need to see it as a gift to live and take a break. Especially with the unemployment rate being so low.

  9. Be humble but don’t settle. Know your worth.

  10. Some employers don’t like to see gaps in employment. If you’re planning to take longer than a couple of months of a break, make sure you’re prepared to explain the gap, i.e., took time to volunteer, take care of sick family member, continued education. Side note: employers who have a problem with gaps are out of touch and are just jealous that they’re not brave enough to do it :).

  11. And lastly, read #2

Great advice. I also was laid off several years ago. I was not able to collect unemployment while getting my severance. I did contract work and was able To get double pay essentially for the time I was collecting severance. That was helpful since some contract work didn’t play as well. It took me 4 years of contract work at various banks before I landed a full time job. Keep moving. Don’t give up.

Washington State allows you to collect unemployment benefits too.

I believe it varies by state. CA allows you to collect unemployment at the same time you are receiving severance.

I was denied unemployment benefits due to getting severance which was actually a release not to sue. Therefore, I feel it should not impact me receiving benefits immediately.

What I have learned is that the TWC reeks of incompetence. Did anyone who signed a general release and took the payment in installments receive UI benefits simultaneously at BOA?
