I am an ex-employee. I was laid off when B&N closed my 5.5 million dollar store. I was with the company 22 years. My advice for everyone who is reading this thread is to ACTIVELY start looking for new employment. B&N was a wonderful experience but I found FT employment with better hours and pay. I took the severance pay years ago because I knew this day would come. The skill sets you have acquired at B&N will serve you well but leave NOW. It is not going to get better. B&N is going to use PT employees who don't care and don't know books. B&N is culling the employee roster for its most expense employees. Those are the people who have been with the company the longest. If you are concerned about random conference calls then it is time for you to find a better organization who deserves your talent and loyalty.

The maintenance layoffs have already happened in Union Square. 86th and Lex as well.
When is the janitorial staff lay offs taking affect? Large store I worked at had 3 people. Not one was full time. All were part and each covered one shift alone. The work is an overload.
Barnes and Noble have started to laid off more people, this time "non productive" hours, aka the maintenance/janitorial staff. It's happened at a few stores in NYC (like the Union Square location), and they're cutting back on basic cleaning supplies. That is not the sign of a healthy company.
I heard from the Chairman/CEO that it's gong bankrupt by Labor Day.
I overheard a DM's conversation and she thinks the company will close after Christmas.
