Hiring of Minors in the Northeast

Does anyone know why we don't hire minors? I can't find a policy on it anywhere, my DL and hiring agent doesn't know why we don't allow it but just say "No" when I ask. Doesn't make any sense.

Who can we call for this?

I heard it was due to a minor getting killed by equipment they were not allowed to use. So one bad manager affects all

I am a manager in NJ. We were told by our HR Business partner (pre layoff) and Area Employee relations Manager not to hire minors a few years back. I challenged them both and said it is discrimination. I never listened to them and continued to hire minors with no issues. Obviously you must adhere to state laws and regulations, but there is currently no reason a minor cannot work in our stores. I normally schedule on 3-6:30 PM and the next 6:30-10:00 PM to avoid having to give meal breaks and having just the manager ringing for 30 minutes. Same works on week end mornings. One 7-11 and the next 11-3. You avoid the "break issue" and it allows you to have a cashier continuously without having to be by your self during a break. It also thickens up your roster a bit so you can have more employees who do not require a lot of hours. As a side note...I started as 16 year old cashier and worked my way up while attending college. I'm 42 now and am a pretty respected manager. You never know who you are passing up on.

MINORS...another shining example of CVS working its magic. Once upon a time minors worked in all CVS stores. Someone decided to enforce the rules and regulations governing the employment of minors and CVS was fined big time. At first we were told we needed approval to hire minors, which nobody ever received, but that was only until they could figure out a way to avoid DISCRIMINATION lawsuits. That’s when the company who eliminated tobacco, reinvents Pharmacy, and wants to help its customers lead longer, healthier, happier lives decided everyone they hire is eventually going to work in the Pharmacy so they must be 18 years of age. What a bunch of BS.

Hats off to the manager who recognizes minors can be productive staff members and utilizes them on weekends to put up ad signs. To the manager who finds minors “useless” you probably just want to get all the points on the Minors section of the HR Compliance Audit.

The irony is CVS probably forced minors to get jobs that pay them more than some pharmacy techs.

I hire minors in PA. DLs day not to, but they have weekend availability so they do all the ad signs.

Minors are useless. They can’t ring/sell restricted items. They must leave by 10pm. They can’t operate any equipment (baler, elevator, belt etc..)

Must be at least 18. All they can do is collect shopping carts and clean the restrooms. Who has hours like that??

As it has been explained to me, any employee must be eligible for work in the RX dept and that requires the associate to be 18 or older. Don't know if that's accurate.

Do you sell alcohol in your store? Here in Indiana you have to be 19 in order to ring it up. If you higher a minor, plan on just standing next to them at the register. Then you will not get anything done.
