Thread regarding IBM layoffs

RA Tomorrow for Tech Sales (Thurs March 29)

This was just posted on Watching IBM and is quite believable.

Please keep this anonymous.

Many of us in the Technical sales arena are getting our walking papers on Thursday, March 29, 2018 with a 90 day notice period.

When the manager’s call was held, the clown that led the call started off by saying the following, “I look forward to working with you all throughout the year on this and other opportunities.” Talk about a lack of situational awareness and a complete lack of empathy…shocking I know. 🙂

HR and the executives on the call kept telling the managers that they need to own the process and the decision of who was let go. One of the managers brought up the concept of Culture, Ethics, and being honest and the fact that IBM has created a toxic culture because we are being forced to lay off people that have done nothing wrong. This is not about their performance, this is about IBM’s lack of execution and strategy and driven strictly by profit/greed. Several managers that had people affected by this action spoke up and applauded him for stepping up and stating the facts as they are. Of course HR and the executives completely sidestepped his factual statement.

Also, for those of us that are forced to lay off our entire department due to the infinite wisdom of our executives…this wasn’t a choice. They want us to tell them it was our choice. Oh sure, that would go over really well. The conversation would go like this, “Hey Joe, I am calling to let you know that you are being laid off along with my entire department and myself….oh and it was all my choice.” LOL (The stupidity and audacity to tell us to let them know it was our decision.)

The Technical Sales organization employed 6,000 people four years ago. During this round of layoffs they are letting go 1,000 more Technical Sales professionals, leaving the organization with less than 3,000 in total to cover the entire North American region.

Ginni has destroyed this once great company. I am no longer proud to say that I am an IBM’er and I haven’t been for the last 6 years. I was hoping it would change and that the board of directors would wake up to her lack of vision, plan, and strategy. She has killed the company and the pride that went along with treating people like people instead of just profits. I am sick and tired of laying off people that have done nothing wrong and have done exactly what was asked of them. I won’t miss looking over my shoulder and having to tell another hard working person that they are being laid off through no fault of their own.

1xor reporting back: My team didn't get hit today. Hybrid cloud development. But as we all know, we're still not even remotely out of the woods.

Does anyone know how consistent the 9/10 am notification is? Currently around 10:15 PST and my manager has been MIA so far, besides some short periods of being available on Sametime. But this is also his first day back from vacation, so it could have to do with that. No meeting notifications for anyone on the team for what it's worth.

I was told directly by a manager that it was stated on the management/exec prep calls that there will be another round in a week and a half. Perhaps others with information about that call, or who were on it, like the one manager who was very offended by the content, could verify. Doesn't sound like a rumor, but yes, often they are delayed some days, weeks, etc due to legal stuff. In this case, today's RA was scheduled earlier but was delayed by legal wrangling about whether or not IBM had to do the 90 days notice.

@1sln you're the second person to mention this, assuming you're not the same person as before... Where are people getting that? I wouldn't be surprised, I'm just curious why a week and a half is being tossed out.

Next round in a week and a half? Just another guess? It took three or four guesses to get today right.

as far as who makes the decision - in some cases I know that names were given to the FLM by higher ups. From there I think it's somewhat negotiable, the FLMs can push back, etc. The one manager who posted here yesterday about the prep call said the execs were telling the FLMs to "own" it though, so it seems like they were putting it all on them. Harsh, since a lot of them will likely get cut in the next round in a week and a half.

Who makes the decision on which individuals get the RA?

The FLM? His boss? HR? Senior Excecutives?

I had my call already today. Last day is June 27. 90 days notice, one month severance. IBM got forced into giving 90 days due to the size fo this layoff and thereby tripping the WARN act limits in several states. Someone said that taking the educational assistance will cut back your severance. That's only true for the technical boot camp option. You can use the $2,500 education assistance option without affecting your severance. I'll have more info as I get my package tomorrow via overnight. 1Q commissions will be paid, but not all of 2Q since they're pulling a fast one by dumping people on the 27th, before the end of the month. I'm in US tech sales hybrid cloud.

Can't wait until June 27!!

-1cyz The WARN act notices will probably be sent to the states by IBM today, since today starts the 90 day period until we are given the boot.

Support and Development have been cut to the bone or sold off to BPs such as HCL, PSL, Wipro, CloudOne, so there’s no surprise here that Sales is finally being thinned.

@1jzk When would a WARN notice be posted? Just checked the current California one and didn't see IBM listed. So either it's not listed yet or it's not enough to trigger the notice?

@1iij Source? And is this still tech sales, or is it other areas?

For those wondering why 90 days vs 2 weeks.

The RA for Sales was based on PiP aka not delivering on quota/plan. They effectively used a sales-related reasoning to terminate for cause. When moving the tech sales team to team quota plan aka pool plan - tech sellers are no longer responsible for specific accounts and quota so therefore you cannot use the same mechanism. Now why 90 days? This is due to the WARN Act specifically those ou in the State of NY and CA. If you trip specific metrics for mass layoffs, you have to give the federal government 30 days. This remains fairly static across the country WITH the exception of California and New York. CA and NY both require 90 days notice from companies. Since IBM is cutting in all locations, it would be within the organization's rights to give everyone but NY and CA employees 30 days and 90 days to those in CA and NY. However, if you were to do that - it would be especially assholish thus giving the tech sales team 90 days.

And there's another one coming in a week and a half, probably a lot of managers. Sales got 2 weeks tech sales got 3 months.

From the development side of things, I wish you all luck. And I'll report back on if areas outside of sales end up getting hit with this one.

The calls tomorrow morning are to let those who are being cut know. The management part is done, the training has already been done and a few conf calls, as the original poster described. It was quite hostile/contentious. Tomorrow people are getting informed. You might not get your meeting notice until the morning. Good luck all, I already know I'm gone tomorrow.

Is it Standard Operating Procedure to inform those that are RA'd first thing in the morning?

Also, would the meeting invites to those being RA'd have been sent already?

2 weeks are for people who are let go because of poor performance. Different than the RA, that is just reduce 1000s.

@hib are the 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. calls that you are referring to to let the poor folks who are laid off know, or are they further management meetings on the topic?

Also do you know if this layoff and the terms at appy to both Canada and the US? Thanks for the info.

Seriously, how do they decide 2 weeks vs 90 days? Does anyone know? If it's just sales, why just sales?
