Thread regarding IBM layoffs

March 28 layoffs at IBM

End of the quarter will be the date for layoffs. Say March 28th. This like clock work.

Has anybody heard more about this? Any truth to it? I wouldn't be surprised to find this to be true, at least based on several previous layoffs. The end of the quarter does seem as IBM's favorite time for cuts.

Layoffs are at the end of each quarter. Like clock work. Big layoffs this week hitting. See Facebook. Next round is end of June. I am still struggling to find a job after months of being out of work. Nobody wants to hire 55 plus workers. At 10 dollars sure ..... best of luck. Get the he$$ out before it’s too late !

You can see from the sales posting that the 28th has hit their department. Think quarter folks , that is when the bulk of the layoffs happen. June will be here the next round. Find a new job folks, get out of the company if you can . Hard sticking around when the knife is always near your neck no matter how good you are ....

Everyone I know in IBM is nervous when an RA is coming. Even people who could survive without their IBM jobs don't necessarily want to lose control of their future.

Easier said than done. Some of us have families to support and need to be at least a little worried and prepared.

Before some smart--- responds with a "duuuuurrrr just leave then", some of us also have current life circumstances that don't allow us to go job searching right now unless we absolutely have to. Not everyone can just start job searching at the drop of a hat.

Anyone who doesn't understand these kinds of things is either very inexperienced or has had a very lucky life.

Get back to work and stop worrying. They will let you know when it is your time to go.

Okay, if the 28th is the day of notification. Can anyone confirm that it is still 2 weeks notice with 30-day severance in the U.S.?

IBM is just a tired old giant waiting to die. While the execs continue their fine dinning.

RAs seem to be happening at IBM Australia, kicked off in the last few days. So looks like the end of quarter reasoning is correct,

Typically the RA's happen after quarter close. If Tech Sales is the focus, especially in Systems, if equipment ships, management should want those folks around for a smooth installation, but who knows. The recent 'Old Head's article may have also caused some delays as IBM may not want to add more gas to the fire. Good Luck to all.

@bbm the prediction that a layoff will happen, and that some areas could see deep cuts, is based off known strategy discussions, some of which has been leaked (e..g, the Bain and Company presentation). Also there's definitely a lot of financial restructuring going on within the company. The T&P head is now CFO for a reason. My sense is that the GTS/GBS merger into IBM Services is the start of the largest restructuring IBM has gone through in a long time, if ever. The move toward a "leaner and meaner" IBM seems very likely through arrangements like those made with Persistent and HCL. The specifics on when things happen and what areas will be targeted are kept very close to the chest and could change while execs wheel and deal for their units, so those predictions will always be off and vary for each unit, but don't dismiss the overall warning that something big is in the works.

April 13, because it's Friday the 13th.

I mean, we're just throwing numbers out to see who gets it at this point, right?

@yox I'm in development, but that would fit with things I've heard. My fourth line has frequently mentioned "Progress on ongoing development work" and "Let's check back in a couple weeks" based on what I've overheard from my manager. Of course, it's not very comforting knowing that it'll most likely be on the timeline of whenever the ---- the fourth line feels like doing it, and names could quite possibly shuffle every couple weeks. But it's also buying some borrowed time for the eventual victims, so there's that.

These predictions are starting to become as comical as the people who predict when Christ is returning. Each date goes by and nothing, followed by a new and improved date. Eventually, one will be right.

@yox interesting thing about that. The US Tech Sales team has now gone to Team-Based quota plans and the end of April is supposed to be the first commission payment for this year. If that were the last day it would make for some VERY uncomfortable conversations as (congrats you worked the entire quarter and you don't get any commission for it). I guess that makes it even more likely.

RAs for US Tech Sales not scheduled to happen until after earnings announcement April 17th. Managers after THINK told to assess Marketing/Sales opportunities for 2Q. What closes in 1Q and what opportunities exist in 2Q will drive who will stay and who is on the chopping block. Look at history of past RAs that were announced in 2nd quarter.

My manager is on vacation that day, though he started talking about that last week. So I'm assuming that if it is then, at least some managers aren't aware yet. Either that or they just found out after Friday around noon PST (when he sent my team the official email that he'll be out). Again, this is assuming it's Wednesday. The simplest explanation in my case is that it's not, at least in my area.
