Thread regarding Pearson PLC layoffs

Severance

Pearson hasn’t offered 1 month per year of service in severance packages in over a decade. A typical package is two weeks per year of service for most staff; high-earners and senior execs get three per year of service. Some include health insurance for the duration of the package, and a few can negotiate other concessions.

If the unfortunate happens, don’t sign anything right away - take the time to read everything, and maybe even pay a lawyer to look it over for things you might miss, or want changed before you sign. It never hurts to ask - I know someone who got their health insurance paid out for a full year, longer than the severance payments themselves.

If you feel you may have grounds for a wrongful termination, that line about NOT signing until you can get a lawyer to review the package terms goes double. Just be aware that wrongful termination is very difficult to prove, especially in a large re-organization as Pearson is about to start, and many of the states Pearson operates in are “at-will employment” states, where the employer may terminate anyone at any time, for any or no given reason.

In general, Pearson tends to be very careful about covering itself in terminations - but they have settled a few age-discrimination accusations, at least according to rumors.

What if you ate wrongfully terminated due to a disability, gender, race or retaliation for whistleblowing. Does signing the severance package waver make Pearson immune to illegal activities such as above?
