Thread regarding IBM layoffs

March 14 IBM layoffs

We know people are being laid off today, do we have any more info on which departments are being hit and how many people are affected? Can people post here please if they have any info?

It's always possible that it "was" 100% certain (we know that's true, some of us have gotten this info directly from management, names and all) but for some reason has been called off. Anything's possible. Earth could be destroyed tomorrow. But this is/was a real thing. Again, over the years, this on/off drill has been pretty regular, but the RA always happened in pretty close proximity to when it was supposed to. So, we wait.

One thing I know is that this has a profound effect on morale for both those who will be cut and those who aren't. So if there are any IBM execs monitoring this, or HR folks, be aware of that. I'm sure they are and don't care. After all, the objective is to get people to leave. But be aware that the more you torture them before executing the RA, the bigger the chip on their shoulder when they go to work at big potential or existing customers and/or competitors.

How can anyone “know with 100% certainty” ? My manager told me my team is getting cut, but what if she is wrong? Not too many people can be totally sure and those few do not contribute to this board.

" I sure hope it hasn't disintegrated to the point where HR has determined that no notice is required"

Perhaps this is the case. There is no law that says a company must give you any time between notice of termination and the actual date. In many companies you get the layoff notice and are immediately walked out the door the same day, and your access to company systems disconnected immediately. I have friends in other companies who actually could not connect into their company systems, thought it was a network problem, then received a call a hour later that they had been terminated.

IBM now knows that once notice is given, the person for all intents and purposes stops working. So there is no advantage to them of a 90 day, or perhaps now even a 14 day period between notification and termination. If HR has improved their termination process cycle then expect shorter notice times, if any.

"Perhaps the board finally decided to can Ginni and have held off the RA in order for the new CEO to have input, but I think that's wishful thinking."

If this were to happen, I would be watching for the sun to rise in the west, Arabs and Israelis to declare peace, Mueller to find evidence of collusion, and my lottery ticket to be the jackpot winner.

I know with 100% certainty that I am on the list, and I've not heard anything yet. Given that everyone will be heading out to Think over the weekend I would have thought that something would have been communicated this morning. I am going to continue to operate on the sad premise that I am out of here at the end of the month. If not, then it will be shortly thereafter. I sure hope it hasn't disintegrated to the point where HR has determined that no notice is required.

"can we pile this one onto the false rumor hill?"

No, definitely not. I know with 100% certainty that this is/was slated to be a big RA and names were picked already. It was absolutely going to be this week. Someone reported that a change was made to the package earlier in the week. That could have possibly delayed it. It's happened before plenty of times - a last minute legal snafu, etc has delayed RA's, but they always happened when they were supposed to, give or take a week or so. Someone reported on Watching IBM (Facebook) that they got cut at the end of the day yesterday (GBS US). I think it's today, makes sense given end of month is two weeks away. But if it's not, that doesn't mean it was a false rumor or reprieve, I'm sorry to say.

Anything is possible. Perhaps the board finally decided to can Ginni and have held off the RA in order for the new CEO to have input, but I think that's wishful thinking.

Good luck everyone.

So, today being Friday March 16 with no news of a massive RA presuming nothing happens today, can we pile this one onto the false rumor hill?

Packages are sent via UPS. You will be notified evening before or first thing in the morning if you have a delivery from IBM...

@wpl the last one was on February 13, not 14. Go ahead and look back on the Watching IBM page if you don't believe me.

Which is to say that 2 weeks notice doesn't necessarily mean it'll be 14 days on the dot. If anything, going by last month it would be tomorrow because that would put it at the same 15 days.

if the last day for those RA'd is the last business day of the month, that would be Friday March 30th.

2 weeks notice before that last day would be Friday, March 16th.

February was different. Last day at end of month was Feb 28th. Two weeks notice was Feb 14th.

What do you think of that?

I signed up for UPS My Choice, that seems to be the delivery notification service -eey was talking about? Great idea! But do they send UPS in the US or FedX?

I'm also on the list and my manager has heard nothing so far, other than it's still supposed to be this week (per guidance to managers last week). But be aware that a cut this big will likely have managers in it too. If your manager is getting cut, you both might be getting a call from the 2nd line.

If you sign up for alerts on UPS, you will be notified the day before that you are receiving a package from IBM..

Seems like just the one person so far, which is odd. I wonder if they got the call ahead of the pack due to some situation like they were going to be out tomorrow/Fri on vacation or something, so the manager had to call today. Or maybe the manager was going to be out and had to make the call early. Or maybe the rest are coming this afternoon. Who knows.
