Thread regarding IBM layoffs

A lot of the age discrimination is an exaggeration

I think there's only a small cultural bias towards youth and a lot of the age discrimination is an exaggeration. Lots of laid off people I've worked with who had 35+ years under their belt can be entitled and are often cruising by. They're the same ones posting on forums about how they were kicking a-- then unfairly targetted out of the blue. No matter how much you know about obscure systems, if you cruise too long you end up at the back of the line for the lifeboat.

That recent youtube video summarizing propublica said that 60% of layoffs were of employees 40 or over. Think about those two values relative to the length of an IT or engineering career and how little they actually fit the narrative and that's the pivot point they actually went with!

I'm old, I'm cruising and I'm waiting patiently to be made redundant. There is no foreseeable future for IBM IMHO and so everyone IMHO will eventually suffer the same fate, it's just a question of when and not your age or how hard you work. Young or old, it is irrelevant. The older ibmers have observed the downfall, if they remain then they had their reasons or they believe IBM will / has pivoted. The young ibmers probably won't see the axe coming as they are new to this game, they are the ones I feel most sorry for.

The problem with your statement is the other "diversity" groups: women, blacks, latinos are mostly cruising by as well. Yet they are not touchable. So yes, it is discrimination for singling out old folks.

well said @2wbm.

The happier postings here can only be from IBMs damage-control unit - the money saved from layoffs pays their salaries.

Who is paying you to post? IBM ! Age discrimination at IBM is real.

IBM Sending US jobs to India is also real. I work for WPP IT for over 10 years.

IBM took over IT and a year later almost all IT employees were let go.

WPP got attack by a crypto virus and lost tons of money and now facing a break up.

Know before you talk!

Real People are affected, IT is a young's people game if you believe IBM.

Aged workers cruising by? While you do stress it is your POV, it is insulting. I recently selected to retire with over 35 years, and look forward to locating my Encore career. I built an amazing team and given our responsibility, they were mostly senior with similar years. Our jobs being global, we have worked often literally around the clock because there is a job to do with very thin resources available to get it done....and we cared/care about our mission and the company. With this many years, I do have a network of peers in the same tenure range. Perhaps I am fortunate but not a single one 'cruises'. Call us old school but we care about the logo and what it stands for. Senior leaders will change and I look forward to the time when respect for the individual returns. Character and integrity matters and it is those 'cruising' comments that give pause to recruiters who are missing out on the opportunity to hire highly skilled, energetic, promising senior talent.

While there may be some age discrimination, if you have worked 30+ years for a company like IBM, claim to have been a top performer during that time, and cannot handle being RA'ed from a financial perspective, you have been doing something wrong.

discrimination against older worker is rampant in tech sector. A recent investigation in India revealed that CEOs of top companies thro nasscom the IT company syndicate/cartel, implemented an easy profit boosting strategy to mint high bonus by laying off 20% work force over 40 years age.

They used a combination of paid news fake news to depict that the skill of many folks are outdated by coining new terms like role stagnation, technology stagnation, domain stagnation.

it was found that 90% of victims were good performers who endured rotation every 2 years and were victimized by managers who viewed them potential competitor in future.

Due to large stigma on re-hiring of laid off techies in India, most the techies will never find jobs again as IT company policy restrictions in Indian companies ensure these people are eliminated during screening.

I can think of one group of people with 35+ years under their belt, entitled and often cruising by. Ginni, the execs, and the BoD. If they think younger people are so bloody wonderful why don't they turn their own jobs over to some?

What are you on about? You think I won't be able to say that IBM discriminates against older workers, or that IBM treats everyone badly, when I'm 45?

While IBM is sinking, I'm guessing it'll still be here in 12 years just due to its size. Keep in mind that early-mid 30s is considered a millennial. So yes, I'm guessing that when I'm 45 I'll still be able to say that IBM practices age discrimination and treats its employees badly.

If you were trying to imply that I'll get hit with a pink slip once I'm over 40, all I can say is that that would require me to not have left on my own a couple years ago :)

Spoken like a Millennial. Come back and say that when you're 45, and trust me, it will come sooner than you think...

Feuding amongst the generations - just another part of the IBM legacy of destruction.

@uky Step back for a moment and realize that you're discriminating against Millennials with your statements. While IBM definitely discriminates against older workers, age discrimination can and will be directed at anyone if it fits someone's intended message/agenda.

Ever consider that Millennials get fed up and leave because IBM treats everyone badly? Ever consider that things are hard for them because IBM cuts the older people who would otherwise mentor the newbies? Ever consider that they don't work half as hard here because they realize that it gets them nowhere with how IBM treats its employees?

Everyone has it bad at IBM, even if they're not in the age range to be constantly targeted. It's just a fact of being on a sinking ship.

Also, those who complain about the current generation forget who raised it.

You are an idiot. I am 55+ years old, 35+ years with the company. Not only am I not cruising but I keep taking on more work as my teammates are RA'd. Millenials are unable and unwilling to work half as hard as we do and if things get too tough for them they leave. When we finally all get fed up and retire that will remove the only thing left that is keeping IBM from sudden death.

Whether they target older people or higher-paid people the target group is usually the same. Even if this is totally legal it's an incredibly stupid way to run a business. Flush out your experienced skill because it's too expensive and replace it with non-skilled cheap labor. Then wait a few months and do it again. And again. And then wonder why you can't attract top talent and your employees hate you. It doesn't take a genius to see where that ends.

The fact that you think older workers are less capable is, in itself, age discrimination. You don't see it in IBM because you don't see it in yourself.
