Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Absolutely No Respect for talent and hardwork

It is so evident from this round of layoff that VP's don't care how smart engineer you are , how many patents under your name, you work 80+ hrs a week, if he/she doesn't like you, he has the power to put your name on THE LIST. No questions will be asked. No explanations will be given. He has the remote control in his hand.

"I almost choked on my caviar reading the OP. Claims to be talented and smart, then says (s)he works 80 hours per week. LOL!!"

SO TRUE! If you worked more than 40 hours to get projects done at the company, you were definitely unsuited for the position. I could work 25+ hours and get everything done. The rest of the time was spent on meetings and internet (investing).

The meetings are QC are normally just a way to get away from the desk and check Facebook/Google/Instagram, etc. Most of the people in the meeting were on ~50% in a mental attendance since they were just checking sh!t on their laptops. Meetings are big waste of time!

I don’t know where you grew up, but where I come from only dullards and fools work those kind of hours. Smart, talented people can either get it done in <40 hours, or they get the dullards to do it for them.

Well over 10+ years on the job - GONE. 'Leaders' asked me to spend the next 2 weeks skyping with my Chinese replacement to share my talents. --> Working from home til May 4th. then come in and spend time over at skills training center getting my resume updated, making sure my unvested RSUs DON'T get cancelled (talked with my corp lawyer, and a Sr HR rep and they can't cancel the unvested RSUs- fight it or lose it), turn in equipment and spend May on the beach.

If you have to work 80 hours a week constantly you failed the job, applies every where.

So what can we do as engineers to fight back these clueless but unfortunately powerful VPs . I am a victim myself worked 70+ hours responded to world wide requests ...put my family life on the line...earned 6+ ratings...and was put on the list last week. Honestly i feel stupid right now. Our product was a BIG success for Q but my whole group who made it happen ended up on a list. So unfair.

4 qualstar awards within the last year. Worked during weekends. Responded to offshore requests late at night. Save the boss's a$$ MANY times --> Laid Off.

Do I care? Only that I really liked qc. Now, not so much. But my boss will panic trying to solve what I used to do for the department. Working from home until May 4th.

Not true. At least in my department, most of the let-go people have only questionable skills/efforts.

...Interesting, if the engineers were call to a room and informed. Were the associated counterparts in program and product management etc. impacted too ?

I got the notice and I'm only at an engineer level which it doesn't matter for me that much I can have a career somewhere else, however, one of my colleagues he's at a senior staff level and he also got the notice, I can notice the bitterness on him already for working at a place for 16 years and one day you just get the boot like that smh

So true our group delivered one of the most profitable product line to Q. And now that the hard part is done they cut our whole group to move our jobs to India. Some of the most intelligent and hard working engineers were all put in one room and told "we are sorry" Meanwhile the line of products they implement is making the company north of 500 million annually. Maybe Trump would like to hear our story at least he cares about American jobs.

Don't worry about those bosses. Eventually they will be the losers, not you. This is the opportunity to find a job that keeps you happy for a long time rather than going to Q every day and thinking what happens next. I lost my job few times and I found a better one always. No regrets at all.

If you have evaluated correctly what they have done so far is not fair, that's not the place for you. Don't even think again in your toughest time. QCOM downfall began a while ago and I don't see the bottom yet. Shame on Q for miserably failing (with truckload of cash) when everybody else is succeeding in this space.

Tough times are always better, you will survive and become stronger. Believe in yourself.
