Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Kmart price comparison with Target and Walmart by category: Clothing

Please note that for some items like socks and briefs they are packaged in different quantities for each retailer (hmmm I wonder if that's to make price comparison difficult) so for briefs and socks the price will be adjusted per unit so the same quantity can be compared. I also tried my best to find the exact same items and I believe I did, but it is possible that I made an error as there are so many variations within these brands.

WRANGLER MEN'S REGULAR FIT JEANS

$16.99 Kmart

$18.77 Walmart

$16.99 Target

Fruit of the Loom men's white briefs

$9.99 Kmart 7

$8.96 Walmart 7

$9.71 Target 7 ($12.49 Target 9 PACK is all I could find so for the sake of comparison I'm using the per brief price at Target to adjust the price for 7 = $9.71)

Hanes Men's cushioned ankle socks

$8.66 Kmart 8 ( pack was 12)

$5.23 Walmart 8 (pack was a bonus pack of 13)

$9.29 Target 8

Now for the sake of comparison let's assume someone buys 2 pairs of jeans, 1 pack of briefs, and 1 pack of socks, the total basket totals for 4 items would be:

$52.63 Kmart

$51.73 Walmart

$52.98 Target

Target currently has a spend $50 on clothing get a $10 gift card promotion and Kmart has spend $40 get back $20 in points. After these promotions are added the new totals are:

$32.63 Kmart

$51.73 Walmart

$42.98 Target

Once again Kmart is by far the deepest discounter.

This doesn't even consider Free Cash offers as they vary from customer to customer that would make it possible to purchase just 1 of these items and save OR the fact that Kmart has a digital coupon for $5 off $50 available to load to your shop your way account.

I've just been shopping for a reasonably priced badminton set.

Looked at Kmart/Sears first, then checked elsewhere.

Target, including the shipping, was considerably cheaper. It wasn't even close.

@1uex "if you have to drive 100 miles just to shop at Kmart and you're not willing to then it isn't relevant whether you shop at Kmart. ... The people who live 100 miles from a Kmart likely also live 100 or 50 miles away from Target or Walmart or Kohl's."

You're still not getting it. How stupid are you? That Kmart is 60 miles away for me, and I have half a dozen Walmarts, two Targets, and two Kohl's much closer than that. Since there are ten times as many Walmarts as there are Kmarts, that will be the same kind of situation for millions of people. And you're the one who keeps insisting it matters how many people still have a Kmart within 100 miles, when the vast majority of the population is never going to drive anywhere near that far just to shop at Kmart, passing numerous other stores on the way.

@pci, if you have to drive 100 miles just to shop at Kmart and you're not willing to then it isn't relevant whether you shop at Kmart. Kmart operates in shopping areas and I would have thought it would be obvious to all but an amoeba that what's relevant is whether or not people who shop in those shopping areas shop at Kmart. Also the $12 in gas would more than be saved by shopping at Kmart. Kmart is located much closer than 100 miles or 50 miles to most people anyway. The people who live 100 miles from a Kmart likely also live 100 or 50 miles away from Target or Walmart or Kohl's. The fact of the matter is that Kmart is in most shopping areas and their prices are massively cheaper than competitors.

@qlg, This promotion of spend $40 get $20 has very little restrictions. It includes nearly everything in store and online. The other factor is that they regularly have these offers so there's always a promotion on at Kmart to get great deals. The socks are on rollback at Walmart so most weeks they would be much more expensive than Kmart and even without rewards would only be $0.43 cheaper.

Regular price Kmart $12.99 12 pack

Regular price Walmart $12.56 12 pack

Kmart rewards are not BS and not hard to use. All one has to do is ask the cashier to use their points and free cash or points earned on a previous purchase would come off.

Sears Holdings is profitable operating this way as the last quarter proved. Just because Target and Walmart make huge profits and have left their discount roots doesn't mean that Kmart can't stay true to it's discount roots and be a true discounter giving real savings to customers.

Which division of Sears do you work for, because you're marketing to the wrong people. We're current or former employees of Sears and Kmart who already roll the SYWR for all we can, at least utilize the damn 15% back discount (worthless as I found post departure), or are against patronizing SHC for whatever reason.

@qlg And it's also not going to be cheaper to shop at Kmart if you're driving 50 or 100 miles each way to get to it like the Kmart fan keeps insisting millions of people should be willing and able to do. I would personally have to use about $12 of gas, and about 3 hours of my time in the car, to shop at my 'nearest' Kmart.

@sjl I know, this is getting ridiculous. I don't understand how this guy thinks all this cheerleading here is going to accomplish anything. Sears/Kmart employees and other interested persons come here for news about the fate of their disappearing jobs/stores, not to hear why their jobs/stores 'shouldn't' be disappearing. It's happening, like it or not.

The Kmart offer of a one time deal with time limits and restrictions for SYW members is not the same as having the lowest prices. If I want just a pack of socks with no BS, I'll go to Walmart for the lowest price.

And Unlike Walmart and Target, Kmart is not profitable operating this way. The SYW giveaways are not a sustainable program. They can't make a profit giving stuff away, and they can't get people into the stores without the discounts. Either way the company has no path to profitability.

But certainly it's a great deal for people who want to play the SYW game, while it lasts.

So basically this basket of goods with the coupon is only $27.63 at Kmart! A customer would save 47% by purchasing these items at Kmart versus Walmart. The snowflakes must be rolling in the dough if they can afford to spend double just for a bit nicer washroom!
