Why Apple dumped Intel

This might have been already posted, but in case it was not, I think more people should read it. Perfectly stated, from title on.

Apple is moving on from Intel because Intel isn’t moving anywhere

Having worked on a couple of projects at Intel where Apple was the customer (ie modem and CPU “U” segment)....this is sad because Apple was the only customer pushing the boundaries. All other customers were on a race to the bottom on cost. Apple was pushing innovation. Even if the Apple share is tiny, they made Intel teams more nimble and creative. Too bad we couldn’t keep up. But then again that was the thing Steve Jobs hated about Intel.

Intel has completely abdicated innovation and technology leadership for the sake of stupidities like diversity, inclusion and equity. Semiconductor process technology is now being driven by TSMC and Samsung, twin engines fueling the rise of the ARMy which continues to conquer all. Even AMD and GF are passing Intel by as their rate of innovation is much faster than lousy Intel. Last walled garden is servers and cloud and it is also being slowly overtaken. Expect major damage to Intel financials within the next 3 years or so, at least.

@2cdq So what innovation do you expect? Moore‘s Law is dead. ARM chips are not overtaking Intel in performance, they are merely catching up. Moore‘s Law will not magically continue in ARM chips while Intel is slowly grinding to a halt.

The essence of Apple's strategy is to have complete control over the important parts of their products. As semi companies fall behind in innovation, Apple doesn't want to be tied to that ship. Also, Intel has always wanted to sell the same products to all OEMs. The horizontal model. That leaves a big part of the system unavailable for differentiation and customization. That was great 20 years ago when compatibility was important to create the PC market. Not appropriate today, although Intel continues to flog that strategy and it just drives quality brands into the same pen to compete on price with low cost, Chinese makers. Intel wanted to do the same to the mobile phone/tablet market and Apple and other said NFW. Intel's hasnt changed strategy or market understanding in 20 years.

If Apple dumps Intel, and moves to Arm then their PC market share will be decimated. They can move to AMD but AMD is worse than Intel.

Thanks 1kiz, Maybe a more accurate title is "Why Intel dumped OP".

Apple hasn‘t dumped Intel.

OP, learn to tell the difference between news and rumors and learn not to speak about rumors in the past tense. That way you avoid coming across as an idiot.

No Apple Processor and graphics design are so good they beat intel. They can integrate the OS and hardware better.

The last and largest factor Is superior process and cadence from TSMC the competitive drag to stay with x86 is to great a hinderance. What is it now five designs on 14nm because intel has little motivation to move to 10, or is it because 10nm is a rocking node

"Apple started designing its own iPhone chips because it didn’t want to be dependent on Qualcomm."

Wonder what the chips are ? Modem (unlikely) ?
