I think anyone that works at COP always is prepared for layoffs. We have gone from 19k to 11k and will not stop just because oil up spike , they will cut until they themselves are next in line. So yeah nobody pretends all is well it is just a clock to when it happens next.
As much as I hate to see people laid off; I really hope this is true and that they FINALLY make the significant cuts and reorgs we need. Maybe Uncle Ryan will finally have the courage to send the Canadian L48 leader back home. Maybe.....

Of course there are soon pending layoffs.... that’s what Echo is all about..... plus it’s what we do, hire, spend, layoff... excellent management from our leaders, who should get poo for vcip but with all of the asset sales they will be swimming in cash....

If this were YOUR company, how many functions or processes could or should be reduced or eliminated? How many functions or processes could or should be improved by adopting efficient technology solutions? Profit enhancing efforts will be with us forever. The days of Corporate bloat and embedded inefficiencies are over.
OP - you are correct. I have it from a reliable source that there will probably be layoffs again within the next twenty years.
Layoff 3000 to 6000, that will fix it. 6000 will save 1b a year or the quarter interest.
Sell your stock, will buy it. Please resign, we need the money for interest payment.
COP has 20 billion debt in trying to save the company over the last 3 years.
They are paying 300 million a quarter in interest , that does not pay down the debt..just pays the interest..1.2 billion a year.
Selling off assets / staff reductions could help to reduce the dept.
Investors are not buying this stock, the only reason it is rising is that oil is rising.
Once the dividend is returned to a decent value will the stock be strong.
Warren Buffett sold if for a reason....
