How hard is it truly to find a job in your fifties?

I was just wondering, how hard is it truly to find a job in your fifties? I'm not sure if my dad will be a part of the layoff, but if he is, I'm scared that finding a new job might be an issue for him.

He's been with the same company for decades, and he is not really the moving with the times, adjusting well to change kind of guy.

How bad will it get for him if he gets shown the door?

This board is littered with stories about #AgeDiscrimination - see that hashtag and you will see that this spans industries, regions, etc...

Really, this is how the economy operates, out with the old, in with the young - repeat, recycle...

After more than 25 years, I left last August. Writing on the wall. I took a $25k pay cut but with the pension I’m better off and don’t have that persistent nonsense MT is peddling.

Being over 50 myself, I can tell you I

Left SF just prior to turning 50

Worked as independent contractor - 3 yrs

Hired as FT for a top insurance co 2 yrs ago

Best advice: Stay current on up and coming systems/software

Look around you companies are targeting older employees. If you listen, you have probably heard someone from HR say that the companies needs to get younger and they need to bring in younger employees. Realistically, what do you think your chances are of being hired again above the age of 50 when so many companies are shedding people with experience. Not very good, especially if you are a white males, as you will also run into the diversity goal.

I hate to be a downer, but I have seen so many of my fellow engineers laid off after turning 50 never work again. I am afraid that it will become harder and harder for succeeding generations to remain employed as they age.

I'm one of the age 50+ proximity workers affected by last week's announcement. My area has 6-7 people competing for 2 remaining jobs. The job became has become a pressure cooker over the past 2-3 years (to the millennial that will ultimately replace me at 1/2 the pay...a pressure cooker is like an instant pot but it goes on the stove top). Depending on your assigned territory, claim volume and staffing, working until 7-8 pm nightly, sometimes later, just to keep your head above water and have your metrics look halfway acceptable. And don't think this means you are getting OT - they don't want to see your out time recorded past 4:30pm. Seems like my decision will be easy.

He needs to stay current on the changing times, systems and methods of doing work. If someone resists change they will be left behind. If he is in B/N he will have to be willing to relocate and possibly try something new. There is life outside of SF.

I am in the same boat my Dad is in his late 50’s could be caught in the transition. He was fortunate to have some retirement away early in his career. All the other carriers are getting ready to follow suit on changes in underwriting, claims and marketing. Outsourcing and super modeling computer changing the old business model. Got to keep yourself relavant in today’s job market.

Look at it this way could be Trump or worst yet Manafort.

In a growing economy, not terribly hard, maybe not at the pay he was getting. But the key is what you said, if he can't adapt to change easily how is he going to do it at the next company? Every place he goes to work will have evolved into the new corporate America model.
