Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

This is unnecessarily cruel

Anybody else thinks that saying layoffs are incoming but giving so few details is unnecessarily cruel?

This way everybody will be stressing for who knows how long. I'm not going to be surprised to see productivity drop simply because everybody has other things on their mind - things like how they are going to provide for their family if they are laid off.

Really bad move on Qualcomm's part.

Disagree. Principal Engineers should absolutely be retained. There the real brains behind Qualcomm.

Some Directors are also good. Many directors in SD without reports. Not sure how they made it for this long.

Broadcomm did announced that if they buy Qualcomm they will reduce the work force by 30%. That's their business model. The glorious days of Qualcomm will be a nice memory than. Less workers=more responsibility for the ones who stay.

What it's cruel is the reality. It's better to be realistic and know that it can't be controlled. It might not happen but plan ahead if it will.

Principal and above are anyway useless.

The workhorse of the company are engineers till senior staff level with out manager title..

Rest others can be easily let go without impacting the work in anyway ..

Advance warning is good. Time to be the prepared. Make sure have six months emergency fund in place too cover family expenses. Refresh your CV. A good engineer should always be prepared for uncertainty.

I’d rather be informed ASAP myself and the details are probably TBD at this point, so there’s nothing to communicate.

Knowing that a lay-off is going to happen gives those who are short-timers and wouldn’t receive a very good package more time to look for a new job.

If you only have 2-3 years in the job and are getting very good reviews, plus you’re working on mainstream products that earn profit, you’ll most likely keep your job. If you’re working on something that’s not making profit and/or aren’t getting very good reviews (5-7) and you’re a short-timer, then it might be better to start looking right now rather than waiting for a severance package. If it’s like 2015, the package will be 4wks + 2wks/year for the rank & file. Four extra weeks for senior staff & above.

Disclaimer:

I am an ex-QCOMmer. just check this board once in a while.

Yes. I got 3 calls from my ex-colleagues at QUALCOMM that they got "almost" confirmation from their VPs that 20% cut is going to happen at the Principal and above titles. No project is sacred -- not my words. The callers were seeking out my help in forwarding their resumes. I have told them, I will forward their resumes. they sounded really stressed out.

Good luck to everyone - -remember its just a job,
