Math Question

Our payroll has been cut back so much in recent weeks that as a ( former ) full timer, I was 1 person doing the work of 2 people. Does that mean they will have to hire 2 part timers to do the work of 4 people?

oh yes makes so much sense to hire part times who have to be trained. no one there to train them properly . has been that way for a long time. that always resulted in us redoing what was done wrong in the first place. At least we were used to doing 4-5+ jobs at once just to make the place what it needed to be. All of us oldtimers pushed to help the company survive and had a strong customer base..SHAME SHAME SHAME. I am happy to give my loyalty to another employer.

Well, the obvious theory is that for each of my now-extinct RM hours, the store now has 2 at lesser pay & experience. Will (or should) help in some areas, like ZM or receiving, hopefully won't kill the business with lack of product knowledge. Customers are so uninformed themselves these days, how will they ever know they aren't steered to the right thing or given all their options ? At least the folks who prefer to come in, look for what they want & leave w/o interaction may actually be able to find hings on the shelf again. That's probably 75% of the actual customers, in my observations. As an RM, I can say all the worries about that dept are overrated. It's a lot of work, but it's not that complicated.

I had many shifts where I was the only person on register while also watching the Customer Service Desk, answering the phone ( in three rings please ), helping with eplanners and backing up café. We rarely had anyone covering in the Music Department. Tried to always have someone on the second floor, but they were often busy with carts and projects. So many missed sales opportunities, and so many perfect shoplifting opportunities. But what else could managers do? If you don't have the hours to schedule, it doesn't matter whether it's for part time or full time.
