Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Be understanding

I have noticed some pretty insensitive commentd about the potential for layoffs telling people to get over it. That's not a bad attitude to have if you have been out of school 2 years. There are many people that have been at the Q 10, 15, or 20+ years. That kind of stability is a blessing and a curse. Skills do become specialized and the rewards were there for staying. Also, San Diego is a pretty small job market. If we were in Si valley I agree it shouldn't be as big of a deal. You seem a bit callous, but time will catch up with you. Someday you will be in your 50's competing with young punks that appear to carry life in a paper cup. When you have real responsibility it's different. This is hard on a lot of people and your remarks otherwise actually are quite similar to saying at a funeral "death is inevitable, get over it." That is also a true statement, but callous and insensitive like your comments.

I left QCOM because my project lead was an absolute POS. He came from MOT and the one thing I noticed about QCOM is that they promoted people that had the loudest voice. The people I worked with only cared about building their little fiefdoms. Even from my college days, I was told don't join MOT because it is extremely bad environment because of the office politics.

The worst thing that happened to QCOM is they started hiring massively from a specific country with no outsiders gaining any voice or career path. This is what happens when you force out quality people for fiefdom builders and people who don't really care about the company.

QCOM WAS a great company until the original founders let greedy imbecile fiefdom builders run the place

All well put. We need to be empathetic and understanding. We also need to plan for ourself and our family. Can't control what happen in the world so focus on ourselves. We might not be able to compite with the young folks if we let it or due to our circumstances, but if we are willing to work, there will be opportunities, it might not be the same old job or industry but we will survive. Good luck to us all.

Hey OP, if someone has been at the Q for 15 or 20 years then they are well taken care of by now via ESPP alone. If not, well, then they are a maroon. Either way they can just fade off into the sunset colors and reminisce on the glory days of Irwin. Good memories. All gone. Just leave.

And hey - back when I was in my 50's the young punks couldn't even run with me let alone catch me. Now I'm in my 80's and I simply couldn't care less. Irwin done me good. Leave already. Buy a new longboard. Relax.

Don't get fooled neither PJ or Octane are sensitive about the fate of Q employees in this negotiation: they want to win the battle for their personal wealth, ego etc...
