I’ve worked at B&N for 16 and I’ve seen a few things, to quote the insurance company. Starting this job was the most fun thing I’d ever done for myself. I loved shelving! Then I did cash registering and waiting on customers. Can’t count the managers I’ve been thru or the many kids who have come and gone. There have been 3 receiving managers. The one the co. Got rid of was the most important guy in the building.
There are several things I think have caused this layoff: upper management over site, eplanner, cards on the shelving carts, frequent moves within the stores, toys and games. Eplanner keeps the people on the floor so busy that customers are 2nd priority. It causes confusion to customers who complain that we move stuff too much. The toys and games are cheaper everywhere but there are no other places to buy books. The frequent moves not only cause chaos with the booksellers, but also to customers. The upper management has taken categories too far. Self help, for example, is chaos. It’s not the only section that drives us mad and pisses off the customers.
The upper management should try replacing brken shelves, renewing some woodwork and tables and chairs. They should offer a great cafe (not a restaurant) and a clean place to peruse books and drink coffee. Our carpet is filthy. The tile is filthy. Our toilet paper is unbelievably thin and useless. Our custodial help is paltry.when you walk into a B&N store your taste buds respond to the great smells of the baking. You excitement is overpowering. The books are what you have come for. You bring your babies to introduce them to places that are “bookish”. You want your children to love books. Story time is fun. Coming to see and play with Thomas the Train is fun. Treats are fun. Friendly clerks are great, esp when they know their merchandise.
I hope some of my experience in this counts for something. Actually, I probably will be gone with everyone else as B&N goes down the greedy Corp pirate tube. Takes care. It’s coming.
