Thread regarding Barnes & Noble Inc. layoffs

Deceived by SM

I was a head cashier. Last fall I applied for my store's vacant merch manager position and was turned down, never quite getting a straight answer as to why, besides that I lacked leadership experience (despite having been a HC for two years). At the same time, my SM told me that I would get the opportunity to develop said experience after the holidays when my role would "change". She also emphasized how she didn't want me to leave.

On Monday I was told that my position was one that, since October, could not be re-filled if it became vacant (if I quit or got promoted). Did my SM deliberately leave me in it so I'd go to the block? Was she only concerned about losing a HC w/o replacement during the holidays? Was I being lied to the whole time? Or is she that stupid, that she didn't see a hiring freeze for what it was?

As an SM, I can tell you we didn’t not know about the layoffs. Not replacing positions was told to us in October I believe? In my volume store, I personally had already made the decision not to replace a Head Cashier position bc I didn’t need it.

And to whom ever said everyone above ASMs lies? Shame on you. Shame on your managers that they have acted this way because they have no integrity. I bust my a-- for my staff and do what I need to do to help us all do our jobs. I’ve been hauling boxes since Monday. With no end in sight because that’s what a leader does. Am I sad about the people I lost? More than you can imagine. But I need to be there for my team right now. And will continue to do what I need to do because that’s who I am. And I am sorry that your managers lie to you— I am embarrassed that someone who is my “peer” would treat people like sh--. That’s not me and no DM is going to make me change who I am.

I can tell you everyone from the ASMs up lie and are directed to lie by the DMs, usually with scripts written for each specific store and each specific case. This is how they've been laying off everyone who's a vet with health insurance, usually older and they protect themselves from discrimination suits.

Usually they'll just torment the employees until they quit.

You might want to tell any friends you have left and the newbies, they're time is very limited. This company will go belly up by year's end- if not much sooner.

Yeah, but freezes on hiring (which she did know about) usually precipitate layoffs. Did she really not connect the dots?

And where did the bit about "changing my role" come from?

She probably wasn't told. If any of the SM's knew, none of these layoffs would have been a surprise. This would have leaked like wildfire weeks ago.
