Thread regarding Barnes & Noble Inc. layoffs

How on earth did the head cashiers get so effective at selling memberships?

As a part timer who is up alone by the cash registers I'm feeling depressed. I'm just not as good at the head cashiers when it comes to selling memberships and It's hard to be motivated when all these people you liked were laid off. I'm going to continue to do my best but I'm never going to reach those numbers and it's sad. Our store always had excellent membership numbers because of the head cashiers but that is not going to happen anymore

It was difficult and stressful, with constant pressure from management. Folks would get harped on for a bad day/week even though the HC, on average, is still the person who has a super high conversation rate, can manage the front of store experience, and generally trained everyone else. It was emotionally taxing for a very little wage increase (75 cents an hour if I remember correctly). I'm glad no one has to have that individual responsibility anymore, but sorry for the folks who worked hard everyday to keep BN in business.

It was a daily struggle. There was a lot of pressure to hit the 2.56% plus enough to cover the underperformers. The emotional labor made the job exhausting, but my team made it worth it.

to be honest I'm not intending on staying here for long. I'm the OP. I just can't bring myself to quit so soon after the layoffs. I don't want to make the manger's jobs harder. I'm going to wait until I start seeing them hiring for new people.

It just doesn't feel right without the head cashiers. I have to drag the managers away from the center/back of the store for basic things like returns and authorization...what a waste to fire the Head Cashiers!

Don't worry about it, you should be looking for a new job. Everyone else is!

Well, for one thing when the customer said "I used to have a Borders Membership, and they went out of business" we assured them "No worries, this Barnes and Noble store is here to stay!"
