Thread regarding Barnes & Noble Inc. layoffs

And the next wave is the ASM's...delayed just a little

The original plan was to include the ASM layoffs at the same time. However, some folks at the area management and the home office levels, raised warnings. Initially, it was fear of leaving the stores too understaffed before new part-timers could be hired to replace laid off full-timers. So, as a matter of fact, the SM's are being allowed to rehire some of these, but as part-timers, in a few weeks. Once the staffing situation is under control, there go many ASM's.

Another reason for a delay is a bit of horror at what some SM have done. HR is seeing too many reports of discriminatory practices that will lead to legal action. As far as I've been told, age and ethnic seem to be the prevalent worries. Some SM's have come up with bogus performance reports to conveniently justify firing those they don't want. A half-drunk staffer shed some tears while my best friend heard of his frustration that this will harm the company. So, if you believe that you have been unfairly treated with untimely and undue write-ups...perhaps it was personal, or simply discriminatory. And if an ASM is your friend, do her/him a favor and provide a heads-up.

SMs were NOT told about the layoffs before Friday of last week. However, we have been “not filling open positions” or told to hold off on hiring, for MONTHS. I’ve had open positions for over a year... fewer people I had to layoff, as it turns out. But our CEO said he won’t hesitate to close underperforming stores, and since that’s every single store, you should take him at his word. Stop being afraid. Start applying for other jobs TODAY. This minute. Do not delay.

Where did the info about the ASM lay off come from? Were the SM told at the conference, is this new? Do you have any idea when this will actually take place? My husband is an ASM and we're scared to death. I hate what is happening right now, and I need to know what is going on ?? Thank you for any further info you can give me.

I was angry because I was passed over for promotion from head cashier to merch manager last fall and out I went on Monday, but if these rumors are true then maybe I'm better off leaving in the first wave of layoffs.

I assume once the ASM's go, BN will follow many other retailers and create a part-time supervisor position. Adds another key holder to replace the missing ASM, but doesn't require any benefits since they are only part time and they will likely get a $.50/hr pay increase over the standard part-timer so they will be much less payroll intensive than an ASM.

All this posting about “safe” positions. There is a previous post about how the CEO has 350 stores with leases up and how they won’t hesitate to close underperforming stores. Which is every store at this point. NO ONE IS SAFE. You’re only temporarily employed at this point. AND if your store closes, they won’t pay severance. They’ll offer the SMs PT positions and leave it at that. The 300 remaining stores will have SM and 2 MM, no ASM unless you’re at $8mil, because MM are CHEAPER. No other FT positions will be available. Someone else said it best- GET OUT. It’s a matter of weeks, not months before HALF of the stores are closed.

Merch managers in our are are the ones who now have to do all the receiving and all the projects. They're safer than ASMs because without them there will literally be no one who can put out product. They'll be piling more on their plates until the company dies.
