Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

Beware the bean-counter’s magical illusion

General Electric has an addiction to putting bean counters into leadership positions:

Bean-counters can appear to make money when they're often just sowing the seeds of future destruction. Goes on all the time. Companies get fat and sloppy. The new bean-counters arrive and find and cut the fat and slop. The trouble is, they don’t know how to do anything but cut—their entire toolbox consists of knives. And if all you’ve got is a knife, everything looks like something to be cut. They can make themselves look brilliant with their spreadsheets, showing all the fat cut and the temporarily improved bottom line to their masters in the boardroom or at the bank. But they have no idea where to stop. If they're left there in power or, worse, gain power, they just keep cutting.

Saving a dollar has a lot of merit. Recapturing a truly wasted dollar is a lot better than making one—you may need 10 or 20 or 100 to have one stick to the bottom line. But when a dollar is saved at the expense of crippling the business’s growth, damaging its relationship with and hold on its customers, or killing its spirit, it is a dollar saved with a future cost of 10 or 100. Bean-counters don’t grasp these distinctions. To them, a penny saved is a penny earned, period.

The bean counters toolbox of knives return to Greenville once again. I estimate with this layoff Greenville has terminated a little less than 1000 people in one year. But, GE continues to avoid the WARN notice by stringing the layoffs out.

This is why companies like GE are going down the tubes. When product engineers made the decisions customers loved our products and therefore purchased our products. Now we try to sell expensive junk because financial bean counters think THEY know best and force procurement of inferior materials and processes. They show savings on their fancy Power Points and Spread Sheets. They don't get that they are costing the company its reputation and putting the survival of the company at risk. It simply doesn't register in their tunnel visioned bean counting brains.

@RJafer6-2pug, you are exactly correct. Not just a GE problem. These financial gurus have created their own world and are trying to take over as leaders of things they have no clue about.

Used to be these "bean counters" were the folks you went to and asked financial questions that were pertinent to business decisions we wanted to make. Now, they make the decisions...

Why would little guys want to count beans on a chopping block? Doesn't that confuse the count if you have a bunch of chopped up beans?

Don’t worry the new bean counters are on the chopping block too. Along with every other management personal with in this cut throat company. In hindsight the ones who will suffer are the little guys. I bet they shut down Greenville and Ny plants. Long live Alstom!

Trian Partners (Nelson Peltz) is in speed bean counting mode now the Ed is on the BOD. Too bad they don’t have anything to offer but bean counting. No clue about the products we make nor do they care.

Bean counters have created their own world within corporations. This problem is not just with GE. Bean counters are destroying many corporations.

I saw one of these bean counters once in the cafeteria. He was just sitting there counting beans. I didn't think anything of it. I mean, who cares, right? He seemed pretty innocent, sitting there, counting his beans. Perfectly harmless I thought.

But now I know! Next time I see this guy I will go up to him and tell him EXACTLY what you told us. That is we are on to his fat cutting spreadsheets with sticks in the bottom line damaging our relationship with the customer. Of course, he won't grasp these distinctions but I will tell everyone else around us and he will rue the day he equated a penny earned to a penny saved.

I don't know anyone at GE who counts beans. Could you be thinking of ADM instead?
