Thread regarding Barnes & Noble Inc. layoffs

Will they be looking for excuses to fire people now? What Should I be doing as a part timer?

I'm a part timer, I come in when I'm scheduled and have never called off work. Initially I took lots of extra shifts to be charitable but then I was being saddled with them. I stopped answering my phone when I was off work unless it was an emergency.

With the whole full time staff laid off here, will they be looking for reasons to axe part timers? I'm a college student and frequently commute so I'm not in a position to be grabbing extra shifts like crazy.

In the end...I suppose it doesn't really matter. I just don't want a black mark on my record.

I'm really just so demoralized by this sad state of affairs. Is it even worth working hard when they will fire you for it? The full time staff were amazing at keeping our store numbers high and healthy.

I'm really just heartbroken for them. They were great people and didn't deserve this.

In addition to the old timers who were earning higher hourly wages, I think they wanted to get rid of people who were getting benefits like health insurance and 401(k). That's a good part of the reason why they have been moving toward a larger army of part-time workers for years now.

I've been employed by BN for 15 years. I've done everything from management to part time and back again. It's a horrible company to work for. Other places start pay is more than what took me 15 years to earn. I just got stuck. I'm a working mom and it's flexible. We would've lost more to lay offs but those employees all quit before Christmas because they couldn't take it anymore. We lost our digital lead who was there over 10 years and was forced to work cafe. Maybe the company should stop letting people treat it like a library and actually buy things instead of taking books and magazines, reading them and leaving them on the floor. And the hard working and experienced employees get the same lousy raise as the lazy ones. It used to be great but we can't even keep sh--ty employees for long.

The managers have lied to your fired faces. They change the "corporate" script to fit the needs of their own stores.

Everyone reading this should be even more pissed.

two things: (1) I'm a part timer as well (store shelver) and so far at least, it seems the PTers are safe so that that for what it is; (2) being laid off would not be a "black ark" on you in any way. You mentioned that you are college student and thus I would assume that you are not in it for the long haul so to speak. That's good. concentrate on school and move on. Finally, I can understand being demoralized b/c most of us that survived are as well.

Also in the post I saw about a part timer being let go, they had been there for like 15 years.

In this situation, being laid off wouldn’t be a black mark on you. They wouldn’t be firing you for misconduct or anything like that. I do think it’s possible that some part timers will be let go (I know at least one post I saw either here or on facebook said they had a part timer laid off with the rest of their leads) but I think they’ll start with part timers who have been there the longest. They’re the ones getting paid the most and that’s what corporate cares about.
