Thread regarding Barnes & Noble Inc. layoffs

How did people at your stores take it?

Were booksellers/remaining managers and leads told what was happening also? Or has it been kept quiet within the stores?

Our SM found out in a conference call Friday. He told a couple people that some positions were being terminated, but left it at that. We lost 3 HCs, an RM and two full-timers by Tuesday. Our DM personally fired our CBDM the next day. The whole store is in shock, crying together in the breakroom periodically. Customers can absolutely tell and it's hurting business.

I think our DM knew it was coming before Christmas and quietly promoted our Receiving Manager into our open ASM spot to save her even though she wasn't really qualified by the standards of just a few years ago. At the time it seemed like a really weird thing to do, but now it looks like kindness. If so, I my opinion of the DM has gone up considerably.

Hey you, RM, the one who put on a forced happy face and clocked out quietly...I think I know you. If it is you, I was the overachieving Head Cashier who would sit across from you during our lunch breaks. You would take my banana peels with you for your special projects.

I got canned right after you! You busted your behind in receiving. Knew what you were doing 100%. And you know I made the store look good with membership sales. Kept us on top! A toast to us! May we find bigger and better opportunities.

At my location we were told no social media, but we can talk to our friends and coworkers if we want. It was only the other head cashier and I fired (didn't have any of the other positions anymore) and we were both scheduled to come in early before open so that when we left there wasn't anyone else in the store. The SM told everyone else during the morning meeting and I heard they were pretty much in shock. One girl at the meeting told me the SM said she'd only gotten the email about it the night before, but I don't know how true that is since my schedule was changed to bring me in early

At my store... we lost both out head cashier's during the holiday due to various reasons, and our DM instructed us that we were not allowed to hire new ones. Then our receiving manager was sent packing yesterday morning. The really sad part is our SM knew this all weekend, came in long enough to deliver the news... Then she left for the day! And didn't come in today! And won't be back until tomorrow afternoon. Leaving our management team to adjust to the new information and also handle the concerns of the booksellers.

Will never forget her delivering the news, and how she was out of the building, in her car, and gone... before he was even dine gathering his things.

At mine I kept quiet. I was the RM and first to go. What pisses me off the most, is after 10 years at that place, I couldn’t even tell my coworkers goodbye. I just put on a happy “see you tomorrow” face and clocked out.

Demonstrating that BN doesn't seem to understand how the internet works...

The store managers had a conference call Friday and found out. They weren’t allowed to mention it until Monday, so everyone found out then.

No one at my location was informed. I was personally told not to say anything till Wednesday which my SM said is last day they have to tell people that they're being let go.
