Thread regarding Barnes & Noble Inc. layoffs

safe for another day at least

I am the store shelver, thus a part-time employee. When I started hearing about the layoffs yesterday (my day off), I tried to find out some more information from anyone at the store. No real news and apparently nobody let go yet. BUT, today is inventory day so I am thinking that the bad news will come tomorrow. I did ask the opening manager (an ASM who is generally pretty nice and informative to the staff) if this would affect me and was told "I'm under instructions not to talk about but X (the store manager is in later." well, he didn't make it in before I left and so at least so far as I know, I'm safe for another day. That's the good news. If what I've read is correct, however, the bad news is that we will lose our 1 head cashier, our digital lead (who really has been more of the customer service person for months now) and our RM (which is a shame because she's relatively new but has been a vast improvement over the last one). Guess we will see tomorrow.

Yeah, our RM was let go on inventory day. I mean, it's not like the SM wanted to do it... but they were directed to do so. Not as terrible for those who were there many years since their severance is 1 week pay per year worked, but the newer highers get (if they still had vacation time) a month at best to find something new.

@pdb here --- I found out that these people were fired from my store. Our two head cashiers (one had been with the store for 10 years; the other - been here since the store opened 16 years ago). And then, they fired the receiving manager.

Long story short, when I get it of work tonight, I'm applying to Starbucks, lol

Our inventory hasn't even happened yet. They cut 1/3 of us yesterday so it's definitely nothing to do with inventory, at least at my store.

Our store scheduled inventory early this year. We were all curious as to why - but it seems this was the reason. We did inventory last week.

It s---s that this was done around inventory, in cases like yours people will feel like they are just being dangled along to finish up a huge stressful project, and in cases like my store where it's not for another week, people will be without veteran employees or receiving managers to facilitate inventory. sh-- show all around.

Yesterday was my day off as well, so I'm curious to see what will happen when I go in today. I'll see what I can find out and return to your post later with any info.
