Today, me, the other head Cashier, our digital sales lead (who had been with the company over 15 years) and our Recieving Manager (who had been with the company over 20) were all laid off today. I didn’t expect to come back to work after having 3 days off to be laid off. No notice or anything. I would think a company would give their full time employees a better heads up

Does anyone know much about the law WARN? Is b&n not required to give layoff notice?
Ugh, it is disheartening to find out they knew on Friday. I worked Sunday for inventory prep. I wish the manager would have told me then.
My guess is that most employers do not like to give advance notice to individuals. There is always the risk that an affected employee might do something that might be harmful to the company or other employees. It is "safer" to just walk them out. Most employees would do nothing but it only takes a few. Not what you wanted to hear. Also an employee knowing they are about to be released will not be very productive. I think some "soon to be laid off" employees in very high tech jobs do get advance notice so they can train their replacement but that would be the exception. Personally I don't think I would like to get any warning. I think I would rather stress for a few days going back and forth between fear and hope instead of getting more days of depression. Most people can't really "plan" for their impending layoff anyway. They likely postponed that new F150 purchase decision anyway just based on the rumors.
every sm was told on friday during a rlly huge conference call..
My boss was told on Friday which is why he looked like a ghost.
any decent company should give any employee a heads up. I'm unclear if the store management team knew about any of this in advance or got the information over the weekend/this morning. best of luck
