Does anyone know if the cuts are depending on store size? I work in a smaller store (part-time thankfully) and the only position that has been eliminated is Newsstand Lead. They have said that if our Receiving Manager ever quits they won't replace them but no one else has gotten laid off (as of yet).

Last October corp made a new employee matrix by tier. Only the top tier gets to keep their receiving manager. No head cashiers at any store. A few stores have a new matrix for ASMs/MMs. Part timers are not being touched. Right now, Kid's leads and cafe leads are not being touched but that can change down the road. At first these positions were going to be grandfathered in. When the employee left they wouldn't be replaced. Due to poor sales over the holidays, the grandfathering fell through.
My position hasn't been affected yet but I have dusted off my resume and have fired up Indeed and other sites.
Our store is in the 10-11 million range. We lost our music & newsstand leads & 2 other very senior employees. Head cashiers, kids lead, cafe all safe afaik.
I was a receiving manager for 15 years in IL. Yesterday they told me I could stay the day or leave; my job was gone. I didn't stay the day!
I know a receiving manager who was told the same, that they wouldn't replace if they left. This person was included in the layoffs yesterday. 15 years with the company and they were booted with the thousands of others
The cuts precede store closings which will start early next fiscal year ie. April or may. That’s the reason for doing this so late in the quarter. Expect at least 100 stores to close. If you are in a store that is underperforming, get out now.
I’m part of a smaller store, too. We lost our receiving manager and both head cashiers. Our senior department manager has been given a change in title [I wish I could remember the exact title] that basically tastes him with both receiving and head-cashiering, which he was doing anyway, but now those are his main jobs. We somehow got to keep our cafe lead but the rest of the lead positions were phased out over a year ago. Apparently, corporate was trying to do this over a period of three days, but because they’re super out of touch with basically everything, they didn’t count on it being all over social media within a few hours of everything starting. Our Merch manager, PR manager and aforementioned senior Dept manager were not even told what was happening - they found out because one of them opened the mail [three checks each for three employees inside] and then started looking online. They weren’t officially told until everyone was laid off. Our receiving manager is a single mom with little kids, and one of our head cashiers has five little kids. I get that they legally didn’t have to tell anyone but this is absolute b---s---.
Yeah we were also told that these positions just wouldn't be filled after the current employees in them left. Then I guess corporate decided that wasn't fast enough and we were let go instead
I'm at a 9 million dollar store and our receiving manager, head cashiers, digital lead, and newstand lead were all let go. Nine. Million. Time to jump ship, because it's going to sink.
My store is one of the larger ones and we had five layoffs, so... take from that what you will
My store had both head cashiers and the receiving manager layed off. Prior to that one assistant manager left and was not replaced. I also know that a former store I worked at has not yet replaced a cafe manager that left several monthes agi and lost all leads but the children's lead and lost its receiving manager.
Honestly, with how terrible this went down, I think the majority of us don’t feel the need to help them out by keeping quiet. We no longer work for them so why keep quiet? I too come from a small store, I believe one of the smallest in California. I was cut and my head cashier was cut too.
If your store is small, it probably makes under 8 million dollars per year, and if that's the case, then your receiving manager will be "layed off" (fired). So will head cashiers and digital sales lead.
I'm scheduled to work today (part time café), so I'm going to try to find out what's going on and if my store was affected (probably). I know most people on here are saying that those fired were supposed to keep quiet about it, but I need to know. We all do.
