Thread regarding Barnes & Noble Inc. layoffs

New staffing policy

Wow, I really can't see anything going wrong with the new staffing policy for either employees or customers.

"Barnes & Noble, which announced a round of layoffs this week, is pointing new staffing rules that will allow stores to increase or decrease the number of people on the clock depending on need."

This week was going to be rough since they didn't have a chance to fill any of the shifts that they cut with the layoffs. This weekend is going to be even worse because it's very hard to get part-time people to come in on the weekend, even more so after what happened to many of their friends.

The best store managers will be in the store from open to close all weekend, running from crisis to crisis. I suspect that my former store manager will let them flail with 5 total booksellers on Sunday (since 3 of us released were scheduled for Sunday) and the DM whose office is in the store also will be MIA.

Well let's see....if you let go half your most dedicated employees and you get really busy and need to call somebody in when all you kept is your lazy part time employees who don't really care...who ya gonna call......

I just talked with a merch manager at the store I was let go from and they have 1 cashier 1 bookseller and him since 2:30. He has had over 20 customer complaints about nobody being there to help. Yeah customer service ain't being affected there. WTF is barnes and nobles thinking. Oh that's right, they have jobs and get paid the big bucks......they don't have to think.

I read that B & N told the SEC that they would spend $11 million on severance costs. They wouldn't say how many people were laid off but if they are paying out $11 million that is a LOT of people.

NEW YORK — Barnes & Noble, which announced a round of layoffs this week, is pointing new staffing rules that will allow stores to increase or decrease the number of people on the clock depending on need.

The nation's largest book chain said Tuesday in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that the change will lead to annual cost saving of $40 million.

The company insists that the staff cuts will not affect customer service.

Barnes & Noble said Monday that it was trimming its work force after a weak holiday shopping season. It did not say how many people were being let go.

The New York bookseller, which has struggled to compete with Amazon, said last month that sales at established locations slid 6.4 percent during the holidays.

And this hysterical statement: “The company insists that the staff cuts will not affect customer service.”

Wow.
