Thread regarding Barnes & Noble Inc. layoffs

Core Values?

Working 10+ years for the company I've seen how loyal the employees are. How do the upper management think this is going to help morale, let alone keep up the great customer service when every employee feels a target on their back. Talk about a hostile work environment.

As of yesterday I am officially unemployed. I was a top membership selling Head Cashier for the entire company for a few years straight. My district was extremely competitive. That is all they wanted HC's to focus on - selling memberships. And that we did! Instead of judging individual employee performance, they canned the HC and Receiving Mgr positions at my store. At the end of the day, my hard work and individual performance didn't matter. I made more for the company in new Membership and Renewal purchases than what they actually paid me. They were getting their money's worth with me. How disappointing that a company that preaches morale and loyalty cannot reciprocate those sentiments to their long standing and top performing employees.

They are downsizing their employee count when they can barely run the stores with the current skeleton crews. There is no way to increase sales and customer loyalty by cutting down the current staff. Good luck to the company, and may corporate do right by current employees. I predict ASM's are next!

As a former employee 8 years at College division then 22 years Superstore division, yes I put in my time & totally understand how everyone feels, I was let go at the end of my shift after 8 years, no fault of mine they said, in shock I was, being a single parent of 3 children & a mortgage, I got my vacation hours pay & severance pay & was told I was eligible for unemployment, went down to file for unemployment & had to much money, my severance pay in the bank, so had to be poorer before I got unemployment, so my ex store mgr. suggests I write a letter to the district mgr. 6 months later I get the job at the first superstore in the area, 22 years later I'm a senior, cut hours down to 4 hours a week, gas money, yes I was dedicated, yes after 30 years B&N offers a trip for dedication, which I didn't get, excuse they don't see college & Superstore the same, thank you B&N for all you didn't give me, so yes I feel for all who have been let go from the greatest named bookstore around, there is no love lost toward Mgrs. I've had or anyone higher up, I say enjoy all the millions we worked hard for you, you could have shared with dedicated employees, one day...some day!!!!

They don't care. Doesn't matter what management flavor-of-the-fish-throwing-month they are espousing (make employee morale a priority!!), fundamentally they really don't give a rat's furry patootie about how you feel. They should, but they don't.

I know what you mean. I'm only a part time shelver and at least through today have been safe (in fact, nobody has been let go as of noon but of course inventory is today so maybe they are waiting until tomorrow). But the morale, esp. among those of us not in college, is definitely trending downward.
