Barnes & Noble Lays off 500 receiving managers

This is a nation-wide purge. you cannot hide from this. They are hiding it from the media though. It's a business as usual for the executives.Or not, I don't know what's real any more - but this is bad.

It's a huge tragedy for us, folks in stores and with boots on the ground

What you’re failing to grasp, is this is that it doesn’t matter if receiving falls apart, because the stores will be closing. Straight from the CEOs mouth. Follow the pattern of every other big box retailer of the last 3 years: Cut inventory, don’t replace positions lost to attrition, performance manage higher paid long term employees out, lay off the rest, cut the store to the bare bones, and when it continues to “underperform”, close it. This is the last gasp to make the financials work in their favor for fiscal 2018. They’ll “evaluate performance” and the “market impact” and then close stores. They don’t care how much you gave while you were there, or how bad LP and inventory will be, because there isn’t going to be a store to care about for much longer.

I am one of those receiving managers that got laid off. I have been with the company for 19 years. I had been a receiving manager for 15 of those years. What the corporate employees don't understand is that the receiving area is the heart and soul of the bookstore. If there is no one there to manage it and keep it running properly the rest of the store will suffer. How can you sell product that is in boxes in the backroom. None of the managers left at my store know how to receive. There is only 2 people in the store that know how and only 1 of them knows the manager type stuff that goes along with receiving. I feel sorry for the people I left behind.

I got laid off today as well. I was the receiving manager. I don't understand how that of all positions were cut. Years ago they did the same thing to the receiving department but quickly found out it didn't work.

I got laid off today too. Working for over 13 years at various lead positions does not mean anything to these high executives. No wonder the company is going down. It would have been nice to be offered any position available in the store but no. They just call you in with no warning. Really angry. Depended on this job for healthcare for me and my family. No one should be treated like that. What kind of company has no regard for their employees. Why not fire some of these high executives and you would save much more money and continue to have great customer service that you proclaim keeps us ahead of Amazon. Good luck with that now that you fired your experienced booksellers

I work at one of the stores that lost employees today. Our receiving manager worked for B&N for 15 years, he is now out of a job. Our 2 head cashiers (that also lost jobs today) are a college student and a single mom of 2. There must have been better ways to handle this situation.

My daughter was laid off, too. She worked for Barnes and Noble for 10 years. She has had jobs that paid more, but she loves books and loved working for Barnes. She never thought her career with them would end like this.

The store she worked in was more than $32,000 over their expected budget last season. My daughter was at 6.4% on selling their book club memberships. They are only expected to sell 2%. When she asked if it was something she did or didn't do, the manager tasked with laying her off, almost broke down and cried, while telling her she has always been an exemplary employee.

She is devastated, lost, broken hearted. I feel for each and every one of you who lost a job or knows someone who lost a job. I have experienced the loss of a job that I really loved, too. I wish you all the very best as you go forward.

Yes, I was looking for the number of Receiving Managers laid off, but only found HC’s and DSL’s. I was assured 2-3 months ago that my position wouldn’t be eliminated until I quit or retired. Today, I found out I’m the unemployed mother of a 2-year old, but it was definitely necessary to keep the 8 hour/week employees. Obviously, my boss isn’t the one to blame, but it’s quite disappointing.

I knew there was a problem when I couldn’t get a job after I moved. With 13 years experience, 10 years as Head Cashier. Moved to a city with 2 stores and I lost out to new hires at part time minimum wage.

I am a head cashier and I am gone too. I was ready to move on so no big impact for me, however, some other folks have much harder time. Three laid off at my store

It's true. I was one of those said receiving managers deemed 'surplus to requirements'. B&N not agile enough to deal with new market realities. Signs they are circling the drain. Not just Receiving Managers, but head cashiers and Leads, as well. They think employing noobs at minimimum wage will replace the skill sets of experieced specialists who actually give a damn.

i get your point @lgq but we have our own issues - the customer is gone and recession or no recession we have a ton of issues to solve if we want to continue to operate

Not just Barnes and Noble, MANY companies are hiding their layoffs and have been for over a year. It's a desperate attempt to pretend we aren't in a Recession.
