Qualcomm shares fall as reports say Apple will dump chips

(Reuters) - Qualcomm Inc's shares fell 3 percent on Monday after two brokerages said Apple Inc might drop the chipmaker in favor of Intel Corp as the supplier for modem chips in its next generation of iPhones.

Qualcomm has been a supplier of components to Apple for years but the relationship took a bad turn last year when Apple accused Qualcomm of overcharging for chips and refusing to pay some $1 billion in promised rebates.

@cei Been hearing that BS about Apple‘s own modem chips being just 2-3 years away for at least five years now.

Obviously, that kind of nonsense can only come from people who have no idea how complex it is to build and release a modem. Why would Apple ever go through all that pain? Their modem business unit would have exactly one customer, and as we know quite well, that one customer is not sufficient to cover the immense costs of creating a new modem every year.

If Apple saw any advantages in having their own modem chips, they would have started making their own sometime in the last ten years. At least they would have started hiring people for that effort. But they haven‘t, despite what some clueless bloggers think based on a single job posting here and there. They would have to hire a thousand people with various highly specialized skill sets. You cannot do that under the radar.

And Intel will be dumped in another 2-3 years once Apple has its own modem chips.
