Amid shortage, firms train own workers

"Last month, IBM enrolled its first U.S.-based group of seven apprentices working at the company's sprawling North Carolina campus. All will spend a year learning software engineering, including working in teams on actual tasks IBM needs to be accomplished, while earning benefits and a starting paycheck about 40 percent below the position's regular salary. Several are shifting from other careers."

Well, if they hadn't have decimated the ranks of all the experienced workers through constant RA's, co-lo's, and other morale-shattering methods, they probably wouldn't be in this predicament. Moreover, it has nothing to do with the fallacious claim that there aren't enough STEM candidates in America.

Truly though, just deserves.

I think the problem for IBM is they can't compete for graduates from top universities. My son graduated with a BSCS from an excellent university. Not one single student from his class went to IBM - they all went to Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, Salesforce, etc... despite the fact IBM has a fairly large campus within easy commuting distance. When I asked him and his buddies about IBM, they laughed.

So the only thing left for IBM is to create "new collar" jobs and hope they hit a few home runs by hiring some smart people who either don't do well academically or just want to code and not study all the other crap you have to study to get a degree.

Believe it or not, I actually like working at IBM. The compensation and benefits are pretty comparable to what I've seen in the industry. I work on a good team with excellent first and second line management. Collocation is a PITA, but I live close enough to work so it's not a big deal.
