I have been laid-off again in May (6th in my career). I can't complain about the industry and I've learned a lot along the way. Its tough in life no matter what industry. I've I were to give advice to anyone younger in the industry, it would be to always work on plan B while you developing your short-term career.
Was laid off due to my "job being eliminated". Got a short severance due to the fact that I wasn't with the company for long.. (less than one year).. I am 60.. future doesn't look to bright for me given my "seasoned" experience... :-).. IF I only knew what I know today 40 years ago I would have never looked to high tech for a job. Just don't understand why younger people draw to this cut throat here today gone tomorrow industry. I know now the true meaning of "making hay when you can"..

3200+ people on the departed list in 28 days seems a bit higher than a typical attrition rate, so yes, I think there were a few cuts. That was up from January with a count of 2500+.
February is over, now what?
Why would you get out now, when you can collect severance pay and get a few months of benefits, while you look for your next job... without the daily stress of what goes on at the office?
I'm waiting it out, hoping for a call from HR.
The best people should do the same - 2x the benefit - once w/ severance, the other with a new job.

VMware had a 800 person layoff and the company is doing great. Every January and July there are layoffs. Not suprised about Dell layoffs... now Dell wants VMware to buy up all it's debt?? Dumb move. No BETTER WAY to demotivate employees.
Layoffs in New York affected some VERY good technologists and managers. No reqs to move anywhere and 6 months of severance. How sad. Shame on you Dell.

Layoffs in BDC storage and EMC COE storage team is confirmed. It will be in January second week. Three senior leaders from MDC and gm/svp of storage will be in town that week in Bangalore. No prizes for guessing why they land up here.
