Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Plenty of startups in the sea

I was laid off by Dell about six months ago and I can tell you that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I was able to find new job within two months, and I actually took a month to recharge my batteries.

I have one advice for folks in similar situation. Don't get fixated on big companies. So many startups are searching desperately for people with experience that you'll have no issues finding a job. I make maybe 15 percent less than at Dell right now, but everything else about my job is at least ten times better.

Just spread your net a bit further than you might usually do, and you'll be okay.

here is where being nice to the right people matters. If you can work 3 person job and s---s with social. no vrs ever. you better resign and get blacklisted from Dell. But if you are below average but good with social. You will get vrs either from being terrible with your work or just for asking. Dell will hire you back in a heartbeat. Having network IS everything.

i see much better things, those who expelled based on performance and all, showed up their face again after an year with better pay and i see many those who went out with VRS again after a break

everything seems to be a joke in dell family, they treat everyone as like in voice\text support.

this is how some ex Dell plays the game. They asked to be listed in layoff from their managers, got the package, then come back as contract.

Just put like this, give an option for VRS to all with some good packages, but keep those who applied for it and fire all who dont apply for the scheme,

the one who applied knows how to get a job outside the comfort of dell, if they are confident about themselves, let them be inside rather walks out, but those who don't have the balls to exercise the option, it is not worth to keep it inside the organization, fire at the earliest.

dell recruits lots of HR jokers, they know how to give useless advises like, find out jobs in startups, but the fact is most of the employees are not capable of writing a "hello world!" and they need google to find even the syntax and people can counter argue with their developmental achievements, but a company like this has huge cash to dispense so most of these works are outsourced to other companies\consultants and these dum a*es takes the credit of it.

so don't comes up with ideas like find out jobs in startups, frauds can only do these thing. they fakes resume, fakes experience, eat and sh*t

so what startups can do with these? use them for toilet cleaning, even that too needs some skills,

these are non degraded dead people with no apparent uses.

if in doubt, select few project which are not really important, and fire half of the people from top to bottom and measure the impact. i would say even ninety percents are not employable and nothing will happen to any of the projects.

For most muddle aged 40+ people Dell provides cushy jobs with average pay. Not bad. Enjoy till it lasts.

Triumph is more visible than failure. We try to overestimate these start-ups whereas the success rate is miniscule. It is highly improbable that your next garage startup will end up as some google. You can as well buy a lottery ticket.

Start ups are risky. Not more than 2% of start-ups succeed. The rest 98 end up in the dumps. We only hear the story of successful ones and how their strategy, innovation and hard work made them what they are. Even the failed ones have compelling stories but no one listens to them. Winner takes it all.

@QICFXog Well said. I left 2 years ago with a package that personally requested. Since then I build my own business and on the 2nd year my company revenue has reach over $1Mil.

For those who giving a package, don't look back, charge forward with your dream. You will achieve more then staying in such doom company.

Good luck

Just over a year ago, I was laid off by Dell/EMC. The package was good enough that I spent some time doing speculative work with a friend. By the time the package "ran out" (of time, not money, frugality left my bank account fatter than before the layoff), I had found a new job. I landed at an established (though far from large) company that is a leader in a growing industry. I now make more money and look forward to work every day. The people I work with are among the most talented I've ever worked with. Other than the initial "what will I do now", this has been ab incredible opportunity in the twilight of my career. EMC paid me well for 5 years, but now I'm paid better and work with people that actually want to be there. Sometimes the phoenix does rise out of the ashes. Now I can look back at Dell/EMC as nothing more than a dysfunctional step along the path. With a little luck, so can you.

once runs out of the package, better to become a begger at the office gate, you can earn more from outside than being inside.
