Thread regarding Mattel Inc. layoffs

A Doll Company's Story

"Once upon a time there was a toy company that invented fashion dolls. For many decades they grew the business and children everywhere were happy......and all was good.

Then the company became aggressive and began to hurt other competitors with lawsuits and dubious dealings as it continued to grow its business and the children everywhere were happy......and all was good.

Then 2 competitors (and actually one was a partner) created new fashion doll concepts and once mighty fashion doll brand the company owned began to falter and the children weren't so happy......and all wasn't good.

Then the company's leadership, after decades of mismanagement and incompetency in building a balance portfolio of brands, lost their partnership and were irrevocably affected by the competitor. The once mighty fashion doll began a one-way journey to oblivion as they realized, too late, that they had been the architects of their own demise. To their horror, they had fatally crippled the company into receivership, when they woke up and realized that.......they children didn't care anymore........and all was good!"

The moral: Mattel knows exactly what its going through, because it did it to itself. Greed becomes Arrogance, Arrogance becomes Evil and Evil becomes Doom. The Reckoning of Mattel is upon us all - rejoice and be glad in it!

You guys are fawning in this substandard story gibberish like it’s really any good. Sorry this is plainly not good writing and not at all worthy of any of your hackneyed praise.

I was thinking Weird Al, but Joel Osteen would be pretty great too!

That OP reads like a movie treatment. I would pay to see Mattel's epic failure & demise splashed upon the big screen. It would be quite a challenge for Hollywood to gather enough truly hateable actors to accurately portray our ragtag cast of detestable directors, villianous veeps and sanctimonious C-suiters.

To the last poster, not sure if your referring to the original opening post because the original post was the bomb which in turn prompted my comment which was the first of the tread.

I write from experience/truth and truth always resonates.

My comments are factual, not subjective, and many times written with some sadness as I knew this place when it was the s..t to work for. It was easier to get into Fort Knox than Mattel back in the day.

There were no Toy Majors in worthless overpriced colleges, Otis comes to mind, no Photoshop, no all I can do is trace/hack so called designers.

Engineers actually had an Engineering degree, they weren't over blown planners checking off met milestones.

Many will call me an washed up has been relic which is fine with me because I remember when I was the new young kid in town with zero toy experience who learned it all @ Mattel College of Toy Design.

I probably mentored as many as 30 designers at my last count, It was fun while it lasted, people always asked me,"how did you manage to last so long in this damn place?"

My answer was always the same. Hard work and perseverance, but unfortunately that doesn't matter anymore.

The lack of ability from the top level to entry level designers is appalling. MOA has stunted the growth of Mattel talent in favor of cost cutting measures.

I was front and center to actually watch this happen. From the fun, creative, prosperous party days in the old building to the beginning of the end days on the new campus when the cancer really started to grow & spread.

One of the things I always noticed was how all the different divisions hated & envied one another. Always...........It's like we weren't one company, there was no team work within the company, no cross pollination. The fun slowly stopped and the dislike got more intense.

Engineering then started to slowly disintegrate with all the real engineering off shored to HK, then to make things even worse the dreaded PLM virus was led into the DC by our stupid upper mismanagement.

Design also started to evaporate with all the boot licking, non drawing so called designers rising to the top. Real talent didn't really matter anymore.

All you saw was the hiring of VP after VP after each reorg with the same stupid mass email, pls. welcome blah blah as the new SVP of nothing.

Arrogance, greed, & stupidity ruled as no talent, cliche spewing, individuals grabbed power and their parking spaces.

Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. That's what happened when Swell turned to Hell at Mattel.
