I know that UnitedHealth has to give a 60 day notice if it lays off a sizable group due to WARN, but what happens when they only lay off a few people at the time? Are those people given any notice or do they have to pack up immediately and leave the premises? I've heard somebody mention their coworker was laid off like that, no warning, nothing, and I was wondering if that was true? Seems rather heartless if it is...

@Q2k6h9U-9Bftj needs to learn how WARN works.
They make sure they do not have to comply with WARN as they do not layoff in mass
and many people work remote, so they do a few at a time, and that keeps them from being liable to report how many, average age, reasons why. They have had Lawyers working on this for years.
Advised would be having overtime and was doing it busy time. Just had townhall comment that day was “oh wow our stock is at its highest”.
Yes released no notice walked out cannot go pack up will have it sent to home. Advised would get pay for each week worked for company then was told to call a number about benefits. The next morning severance package was dropped off this company knew they were laying offf like that they had sh-- ready!!! Got paid for 2 weeks but could not work and the severance package took over a month to get!!!
It was the same for me as the prior poster: let go on day X, but had "2 week's notice, during which time I did not have to work." I did actually work a bit during that time, to begin networking within the company, and out of respect for my colleagues. As above, my layoff came with a severance package per HR guidelines, 40 hours of PTO, and job assistance. Note that my remaining PTO (about 60 hours, that I planned to take in December, was forfeited. The lesson here is this: take your PTO!
Was laid off on in October with about a dozen others. Scary that managers can write whatever they want to justify your “rating” and as long as it sounds good to HR, you are gone. No fact checking at all. You can’t rebut or you lose your severance pay.
Laid off in Q2 after watching smaller numbers being laid off every 2 weeks since the beginning of the year; pay grade 32, Optum Tech. No notice, I was walked out the door that day after my management watched me pack. Paid for 2 weeks on regular payroll then severance based on pay grade and tenure (you can look that up on HR Direct). The numbers are small enough by % and dispersed enough to avoid a WARN Notice. No direct knowledge that that is deliberate but my personal opinion is that it's not a coincidence. It also doesn't seem a coincidence that I've seen a large portion being older (more expensive?) workers even though they are key and high performers. I'm not naive and understand business decisions but there is a lot of what is going on this year with the layoff approach and sheer volume that don't seem to make sense from a business or a transparency perspective; it feels shortsighted.
I was given no notice. I’m a work at home. At 7 am September 26th, I was advised my position was eliminated. The previous week we were told to gear up for the busiest season ever. I went on vacation from Friday to Monday and came back to be told I didn’t have a job.
In the buffalo site location they cut the site director position (top boss at the site that everyone reports to). Tim bliss came hauling thru the office laying off several people without notice at all. Nobody had any clue. Then they send out an email to the site stating uhc had no need for several positions. 0 respect for the people they let go
At Optum, they have been laying people off in chunks to avoid certain requirements like reporting and needing to provide people with notice.
I was laid off - Yes, no warning, nothing... Option to contine to work the rest of the 2 weeks but not obligated to.. Also, Severance is not great-- well in NY state- walk away with half of the full amount...
Seems like you are asked to stop working that day, but given 2 weeks pay.
No advance notice
May be different in different situations but that's what I see
Yes, some people are let go of same day, but are paid for 2 weeks, plus severance package which includes job application assistance. It's not ideal, but it's something.
