Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

How to cope with layoff anxiety – medical or psychological or cognitive coping strategies?

It seems that every this or that group at #Oracle gets axed – at this point, all of this has started to affect my health, my #anxiety levels are through the roof. Seriously, I try to avoid thinking about layoffs, try to avoid discussing it with #Oracle folks or family, I even stay off this site. Lately,

I am having quite a bit of trouble sleeping without interruption, my blood pressure is consistently high, I am easily distracted.

How do you guys deal with things like this – do you have any #gold strategy that works for you… Any pearls of wisdom that you may be able to share?

go to the club and work out hard 4-5 days a week, clean your house, booze two nights and hopefully since you are getting in shape you can roll in the hay more with your significant other...

While I was still employed with Oracle, I put in my performance plan that I wanted to get laid off and stopped focusing on my job. They obliged. As a SW gal, I studied Building Bitcoin Websites, and let me tell you, there's lots of capital flowing into the Bitcoin/Blockchain/Crypto space. The Oracle pedigree is respectable (not stellar, but OK). Rent some cloud space (from say, AWS or Digital Ocean), and make some nice demos. If one were in marketing, similar strategies would apply. And like the storage person said, focus on exercise, spirit and those you love. Oracle's not a bad place to work, but it's in a contraction phase. Oh - and read "Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers" and understand that you're stressing because you're in a primate dominance hierarchy. https://smile.amazon.com/Why-Zebras-Dont-Get-Ulcers/dp/1452661413/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1507046096&sr=8-1&keywords=why+zebras+don%27t+get+ulcers

Good luck - post layoff is a LOT more fun than the part where you're waiting for it to happen.

To the OP - I have felt this anxiety, too. I would encourage you to get some short term counseling - just talking to someone will help. I'm assuming you are a man and I know that often it is harder for men to think about talking about feelings, but it really can be helpful. I also think that what you are experiencing is a normal reaction given the situation at Oracle. At least in terms of the Sep 1 event, they've been pretty inhumane about how they let people go. You need to let yourself mourn/grieve a little, too. I haven't been RIF'd yet (I'm sure it will happen eventually) but I have been grieving ever since this started as I watched so many good people get let go. I"m finally, after a year of this hell, getting myself ready to move on. Start taking small steps to gain a sense of control over the situation: do a little networking, or set a goal to have someone help with your resume, maybe take a class online. Also the person who posted about the serenity prayer is right: it's a little corny but it's really true, and repeating it will help you accept reality and take some steps to protect and empower yourself.

Hang in there cuz. I got it 9/1 - a 35+ year storage veteran. Its certainly shakes the confidence. Watch your diet, do your workouts, feed your spirtual self, tell the people you love you love them. There are probably others in your sphere in the same boat that need encouragement. Helping others can be a good elixer.

If you live in some of the states that legalized pot, you can do some and mellow out.

Just kidding.

Doesn't O's nice health plans come with mental health bennies? Try tapping into that.

Work somewhere else. Oracle is only at the beginning of what will be years of massive restructuring just as we've seen with IBM for the past 5 years. It is not going to get better, sorry. The sooner you start looking, the better off you will be. You feel anxiety because you can sense that you may be the next target.

The serenity prayer -- God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference. -- is, despite being a cliche, actually very practical advice.

Also, keep yourself busy by learning new skills. And when I say new skills, I mean marketable skills, not underwater basketweaving.

@mml I'm pretty sure many of those GD reviews are bogus. There aren't enough people working @O to write that much quality BS.

Netflix and afternoon golf for me.

Our director, VP and SVP have no clue as to how much idle time I've got and bypassed me on the RIFs. Or maybe they want me to write on glassdoor how great the work-life balance is here at Oracle so they can attract more NCGs.

Another way to take care of stress, go to your local range. Take a self defense class, my tactical shotgun combat. Helps me with my stress. Look it s---s being laid off, I know it happened to me. But there are jobs out there. You'll be okay, if you want to talk post on board here I'll respond. We have to help each other, Oracle wont. Oracle has its own place in LE hell. ES will hopefully die from cancer of the brain. Peace.

You cope by updating your resume, applying to jobs, updating LinkedIn and working your network. You also try and pick up relevant skills while still on the payroll.

You control your own destiny. That's how you cope.

Everyone has their own coping strategy. I feel a lot better when I'm doing something about it like actively searching for a new job whenever I get a moment.

And when I get tired of searching for a new job, I feel a lot better learning new skills that will enhance my value to a new employer.

And when I'm tired of both of those, I go do some physical activity.
