Thread regarding Follett layoffs

Make a change

To those of you that are so unhappy - what have you done to make the leap and leave Follett? There's a whole world beyond those bookstore. I worked for Follett for over 15 years. It was hard, but I made the leap into a whole new career. My only regret? Waiting. Stop being scared and find a new path for yourselves. It's not going to get any better working for Follett.

The statement that Follett is getting rid of the higher paid employees is not a true statement

I know for a fact the some of new employees hired recently make more than the ones who were let go of left on their own.

Let the knowledge go and hire the clueless. The Follett way of life

That is a great point. Follett is actively looking at internal salaries versus external candidates. If you are over market, you will be shown the door. Just a matter of time. They are taking it slow now.

I am overpaid, and just waiting for the axe to fall. When it does I will start looking. If not, it will be work/life balance for me focusing more on the life. No more a-- busting.

If your salary makes you unemployable elsewhere its only a matter of time before follett throws you out of the frying pan and into the fire. What's more, they'll abuse you out. The don't want to pay severance. They'll pay lawyers to fight you rather than pay you.

If you really think no other company will pay your salary, you'd better brush up your skills or get ready to take a pay cut. That's the reality of a mean economy in a crappy company.

Agreed but hard to admit. The results for the past 5 years speak for themselves. Laid over Feb 2016 and still not employed and I know of others.

People who could have found something, have left already.

People who are at Follett currently are either: 1.) incompetent/unqualified/too stubborn to adapt or 2.) old or 3.) both

Companies don't want any of the above.

That is why company is in downward spiral. There is literally no talent left in the company. They have managed to chase away every single one of them.

You have no clue what you are talking about.

There are many GOOD employees left at Follett.

We are there for a few reasons, other companies do not want to pay what we are making now.

I refuse to go backwards in my pay and I am sure many would agree.

Some companies Shocker are worse than Follett. No 401K, really expensive insurance or none at all.

My day will come when I leave Follett, but I refuse to jump out of the frying pan into the fire.

Im talking to the people with so many years of service. Follett is pushing people out the door but doesn't want to give you anything for your years of service. Hang in there. Get paid for your long service. This is just my opinion.

Some of us nearing retirement do not fear a job search because 1)not looking for a new job 2)if so know there plenty part time jobs out there

No worries.

sometimes paralyzing fear is correct. The person counting down to retirement is justified in fearing a job search. Finding work in your 50's or 60's is a nightmare. The best antidote for fear is a great plan well implemented. If follett pushes the 50+ employee aside (and they've done plenty of that), they better have a great plan.

At no point, however, is delusional exceptionalism OK. follett will drive you out. You're not that special.

I honestly don't think working for Follett is THAT bad. They still sign my paycheck. I still work around an academic schedule (most weekends, nights, holidays OFF.) If it was that bad I would leave. I have worked for companies better off than Follett and been miserable. I may not make a ton of money but I do get paid and have a roof over my head.

Excuse me, in your eyes I am probably old, BUT, I am NOT unqualified or incompetent. Just hanging in here following wonderful directives from HO, until I can retire & waltz out those doors. Jobs are not that easy to get, companies are more interested in paying their shareholders & uppers rather than investing in the real people who actually work.

Staying at follett is a symptom of paralyzing fear or delusional exceptionalism. follet is a failed company. Staying makes no sense for any date.

And here's a word of advice for you.

Remember I said this.

it is a question. Ask it on January 1st 2018.

"So, how's your plan working now?"

That is the question I ask you on January 1st, 2018.

Remember it.
