Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Medical Insurance

I took the enhance retirement package last year, and have Cigna till End of 2017, I thought it was a good deal, until I tried to use it. As I went on Medicare, Cigna was my secondary coverage. Apparently Cigna only covers expenses for stuff that medicare approves of, but does not fully pay for. I had a preventative Injection, that Medicare did not approve of thus did not pay for, and I come to find out that neither will Cigna!

Beware retirees, check what Medicare approves of, before accepting the doctors suggestion. It not the way I read the plan docs, are others having the same experience?

How it works.... Intel gave ERP'ers "2 years medical". However, only 18 months of that is COBRA which gets us thru the end of 2017. For 2018 they gave people 6 months worth of premiums in a separate SERMA bucket that's called "SERMA Healthcare Assistance". You'll see that when you log on to http://resources.hewitt.com/intel/. Click on the yellow square that says "Your Spending Account". For single folks it was $6102, almost double that for those covering their family. You'll see an amount a little higher as it's been paying nominal interest.

As for the comment "positive we are covered until June 24, 2018", yes, we are, however, you need to ENROLL every year for the next year's benefits. You don't do it once and it's all good for the 2 years. Or, I think you can ignore during open enrollment and they'll automatically enroll you in the same plan you had. Not 100% sure on that but maybe that's what @paw is talking about when s/he said "positive we are covered until June 24, 2018".

What is unclear to me (had a LONG call today with GoMyBen) and still don't have an answer) is... I was under the impression that the last 6mo that's paid out of the "SERMA Healthcare Assistance" bucket ($6102 for single person) HAD TO BE used for IRMP. In fact, I found a note from a little over a year ago when I called in about it and was told that. Today I'm told I can use it to purchase insurance outside of IRMP. I'm not sure I believe that but hope its true! IRMP is EXPENSIVE @ $1017 a month for a single person.

Sure, you're saying.. 'So what?? Intel is paying for it'. Yeah, they are, but only for 6 MONTHS. The remainder of 2018 premiums is on YOU to pay and I don't want to pay $1017 a month for insurance. I think I can get it cheaper elsewhere but it's too early to get that info. I tried and was told to call back after 11/1 as they don't have 2018 premiums yet.

Those who retired on June 24, 2016 were given '24 months of health insurance assistance'. We were given 18 months of COBRA coverage paid by Intel. We were given an amount equivalent to 6 months of health insurance coverage in the form of an 'adder' to our SERMA accounts. In my case the adder was about $9K. We are not covered by COBRA until June 2018. COBRA coverage is typically 18 months maximum in the case of a termination and 36 months in the case of a divorce leading to the end of coverage. http://www.investopedia.com/articles/insurance/11/intro-cobra-health-insurance.asp

we had the six months added to our SERMA balance as part of the ERP. Mine was about 12k on top of the 33 years worth. I assume this six months was to pay IRMP if you wanted to after so this year.

@1mmv-not aware of the six months added to SERMA but my recollection is Jan-June 24, 2018 is six months of COBRA paid by Intel. You will have choices as to what coverage you want. Why would tbey send me an open enrollment flyer in tbe mail reminding me about it?

@paw - we already had the six months added to our SERMA balance as part of the ERP. Is this in addition to that?

Are you sure if we took ERP last year we are coveted through June 24 2018? I selected Cigna PPO as part of last years open enrollment. This means six more months of free Cigna PPO.....

@ckc- I took ERP and just received in the mail on Friday that open enrollment starts Nov.1. The way it was described to me is this open enrollment you choose from private exchanges to public exchanges, one being Cigna for six month, ends June, 24 2018. No out of pocket expense, all paid for.

@PkxCvV6-ykm. COBRA was only for 18 months not 24, so OP would lose coverage at end of 2017 if he/she took ERP in June 2016.

Intel provided 24 months of 'medical costs support' but not necessarily full coverage via an actual insurance continuation under COBRA.

Intel don't care one bit but for their bottom line and avoiding lawsuits
