Fire all the managers

Management is the greatest inefficiency in any organisation.

Six years ago Gary Hamel wrote a hugely influential piece called First, Let’s Fire All the Managers.

It outlined the huge inefficiency tax that management layers over an organisation:

As an organisation grows you need more managers, so the costs of management rise in both absolute and relative terms.

Unchecked hierarchy increases the risk of large, calamitous decisions. As decisions get bigger, the ranks of those able to challenge the decision maker get smaller.

A multitiered management structure means more approval layers and slower response.

As you narrow an individual’s scope of authority, you shrink the incentive to dream, imagine, and contribute.

The power to kill or modify a new idea is often vested in a single person, whose parochial interests may skew decisions.

Unfortunately there are only a couple of good ones left at IBM and I mean only a couple. The rest continue to drink the Kool-aid and throw as many people under the bus (RA's) to avoid being found out that they s--- and are incompetent. Trust me I have one I report into now and I still scratch my head as to how they are in their current role .. 64 more days left to go under this crappy leadership

Yes I agree, it is all about being afraid... I know plenty of managers who love to speak up but they know that if they do, they will their job. I remember last year going to an internal conference in Madrid. During the general session, one of the speakers, a VP but newly hired from Microsoft said and I quote: "... in this company, people need to learn to criticize and challenge...". Though I agreed and still agree with his statement, good luck with that in IBM! I will have to look that guy up... just to see if he still is with IBM... my guess he probably left on his own disgusted.

Agree, makes no sense.. You still need Managers to manage.. Finding good Managers that allow and encourage their team to become innovative and not fear making mistakes along the way. That Manager also needs to trust his team leaders. Two way dialog is key, only after that will smart decisions be made. The issue with IBM Management today is that the Managers are just as fearful of losing their jobs as do their team members. Managers today are afraid to challenge the status quo.
