Just check this company: Imation Corp. It is a major magnetic tape storage company. This industry has the unbeatable price for data storage and I am sure magnetic tape storage will continue to exist for a long time. But do people care about it anymore? By the way, Imation just closed its campus in Oakdale and you are more than welcome to check its stock price in the past few years.
The value for data depends on how "hot" it is. Once you store cold data, your storage device's value goes down, too.
Mechanical Multiplicity, you are right. Don't worry about layoffs folks. HDD will turn into a growth industry in no time.
To the Tech pundit person who posted before me, data storage is like logistic industry. Fedex do take high priority packages, but cars from Japan still grt transported by traditional shipppi g industry. Read about mechanical multiplicity concept and you will rwalize typewriter computer analogy does not hold here.
Arguing HAMR vs MAMR is like trying to figure out which technology is going to save the typewriter from the computer. Hard drive business is going to shrink - move industries and technologies if you don't want to become a layoff victim.

Very true. The downsizing of the company is inevitable. This has nothing to do with whether HAMR or MAMR ships first. All laptop, desktop and high end enterprise will go with SSD in five years.
WD’s earning (revenue up 10% YoY) is far better than STX (revenue down 7% YoY). But the stock is hammered. Why? Because they may lose Toshiba’s NAND chip. NAND is far more strategically important than HAMR or MAMR.

PW3s7I6, I agree with you. Now many memory fab is under construction by Samsung and Hynix. And China also investing to semi conductor. Chip shortage will be over soon.
One of the reasons for more lay offs is that HAMR is destined for the Enterprise market. The Enterprise market accounts for only 40% of Seagate's business. WDC are not going to roll over and hand Seagate it's share of this market. The other 60% is slowly being eaten away by new SSD technology. Yes we all know there is a market shortage of chips but how much longer do you think that will last. Not long if certain other companies have their way. This chip shortage is the only thing that stopping that 60% from disappearing quicker than it is. The other reason for lay offs is to reduce operating costs so the share dividend can be kept high in turn keeping the share price from crashing and any possible take over bid. Not quite sure who would want to buy Seagate out though other than owning a few clean rooms. So in short it doesn't matter which is first to market HAMR, MAMAR, STAMR or TREMR (the last 2 are made up by the way before anybody askes) the company is never going to be the size it once was with the market share it once had. Hewlett Packard went through the exact same process...Enjoy your week end folks
