Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Questions on lay off.

Recently joined seagate LCO. My colleagues talking about lay off now all the time, at lunches, meeting rooms everywhere. It seems it around the corner early next year. My questions are 1. How many in the first round?

  1. Group affected?

3 Age Target?

  1. I am on visa, is it hard to transfer under Trump new policies?

4 how’s the job market?

Please only good answers as I have liabilities with lot of loans. I can’t stay more than 28 days in the country after losing job.

Which is precisely why I advised getting professional legal help. Do not come to a layoff board to get your information.

Based on new procedural rules from USCIS announced on Jan 23rd, 2017, a grace period of 60 days is now available for H1B visa holder once he/she loses job. An additional 10 days of extension will be given if candidate has I-140 approved. In addition, Seagate give 2 months of salary in severance package which adds to your grace period as you are paid for 2 more months. Total its 120 days or 4 months of preparation time to find a new job. I hope this information helps. Based on past 1 year following this news board, I am regret to let you know that this place has few but prominent anti-immigrant voices which likes to frighten young immigrant workers with lot of scaremongering. Ignore them and keep looking for other options. Hope it helps!

I agree with the previous post. Getting a job within 30 days is difficult and finding one who will do your H1B transfer within 30 days almost impossible.

Besides this company is not a place where you need to be for getting green card etc since this is a long drawn out process. My advice would be to start looking for a job immediately so that you can find a good company who wil transfer your H1B and where you can stay fairly long enough to get thru your major steps in the green card process.

It is very tough to get another job within 30 days, if you laid off when you are on H1 basically you are done. Just pack your luggage and buy one way ticket to your country. Happened to my friends recently most of them are left.

If you are on H1B visa.

Getting one takes effort, but transfer it to another company is easy at leaast 10 years ago. Before I was lay-off from maxtor, I was scared. Where to go 30 after lay-off?

However I received two offer and each company could transfer my H1B to them within 2 weeks.

You probably won't get details about a layoff until a few days before it occurs. You should be consulting an immigration lawyer for the rest of your questions.
