Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Approaching a manager about a layoff

I've been considering leaving Seagate for a while now, and as a much needed push I was thinking of approaching my manager to ask he consider me for the next round of layoffs. I am not sure how smart that is, though. On one hand I'll be telegraphing my intent to leave the company, and they might keep me in hopes I'll quit without severance. On another hand, I might help somebody who wants to stay keep their job. Anybody has any experience with this?

If you want to leave then make a move, do not waste people's time

Just take a lot of vacations, they will let you go.

Simply put, it’s doable. Every case is different. In my case, I will walk if I land a job with 10% pay cut. Pretty soon it may be 20%. Good luck to all.

I knew people that volunteered in the last round, and they were treated with dignity and respect through the process. Many had been there for a long time, and so it was worth it for them to stay. It really depends on your manager and the relationship you have with them...

The one issue that Seagate can do to you is not pay you severance while you are non-working, yet payed. The last severance plan had that very loosely worded.

If you've been considering leaving for sometime and are looking for a 'much needed' push, then my advice to you would be to just leave when it works best for you. If you stay will you get riffed, or until you get a package, you may be without a next gig lined up. Only you know your situation but if it were me, and I've been through it, I would find a job that I like and walk.

I have seen it go both ways. If you trust your manager, you make his life MUCH easier. Managers really hate to kill a person and leave families to rust...as happened to me.

The worst is when they give you a choice of a crap job, or quit...as happened to me.

When we found out about the looming July layoffs some in my team volunteered. Our manager was actually grateful since it made their job easier in deciding. In my opinion we have a very solid team so it would have been difficult, dead weight had been let go the previous two layoffs. Manager treated them professionally during the whole wait and very few even knew they had volunteered. It comes down to how much you trust your manager and if he/she is interested in your career development or only the companies bottom line. Unfortunately most are the latter.

If you do approach your manager don't do it until you know a layoff is imminent and will affect your team/group.

Never let them know that you intend to leave. They'll do anything to make you leave without severance.Foolish idea to broadcast your intentions, keep quiet and wait and hope it works out your way.Good luck .

The best advice one can offer, KEEP YOU MOUTH SHUT, telling your Manager anything like that will stick you in a hole you’ll wish you never got yourself into. You will get treated to every crap job and nothing you will do from then on will never be right, never good enough.
