Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Verizon Wireless Solutions Specialist average age?

Currently I'm living in Arizona and recently applied for a Solutions Specialist sales job. I am 59 years old and have a ton of sales experience and know a lot about technology and cellular phones. Recently I have visited 3 stores in my area and it seems like everyone working in the stores are 20's-30's. Does Verizon have an age limit or preference when they recruit new hires?

I was 54 when I was laid off from Verizon, but I did find another job that I like within a few months where my experience is valued.

Well this will never be admitted by the company, but they want young people in the stores, so that the millennials will feel comfortable with people their age, since that's the group that spend the most money. Oh sure they will have a few people over 40 in the stores, so an age discrimination lawsuit could never be proved, but having worked for the company for 2 decades, believe me, they do not want older experienced people in the store. Young people with no experience come cheaper (big factor for big red) and they can more easily be molded into zombie-like robots that do not think for themselves, and don't question the deceitful high pressure sales tactics the company makes the reps practice.

I've been with the company 10 years. Average age for a rep is about 25. They want people that can be molded. Older people speak their mind and will go against the grain. Someone like me is now old and they don't want me around. I'm actually above average sales rep but by far not the best. With my knowledge no one is more valuable than me including any of the managers. But with knowledge comes wisdom and I can read between the lines on things and tell the younger reps what the real details are and the company doesn't like that. If you are 59 years old you will not get hired and you'd hate it here.

Younger people are cheaper which I'm sure is the main driving force, but they can probably justify (to themselves) "Oh, our young customers will never relate to a 59 year old...." Even if they would and many of the customers are also old.

I was hired 6 plus years ago now I am 35. Back then it was young and old and the manager were older experienced, that have been in industry for long time. Now managers are younger and those are mostly the ones that slammed accounts to get promoted. Younger reps and younger managers salary are less then the older generation. This means VZW can hire more younger reps then having old experienced, which made a lot of money just in salary $22 plus hourly.
