Help: My former slb manager said negative stuff about me

Not sure what should I do, this is 2nd time my former slb manager says bad stuff about me when potential employer contacts him.

I am down to option to lie and tell employer someone else was my manager.

He keeps recommending not to hire me. I admit I had problems with him, just because he was racist and didn't like me for just that reason. He was only my manager for 6 month.

What is right way to pass this barrier? He fired me once but now he is targeting my life. Help.

Why in the world would you use him as a reference knowing you and him are not on good terms!? Use a coworker.

If that's in the UK, close to being illegal

Tell one of your friends that you to vouch for you. Pretend they were your manager. The other employer will never know the difference. I did that for several people that left before me and it worked out great. Give them the number of one of your buddies at work. But give your buddy the heads up first. Have them call their cell to cover your tracks,

As said dog eat dog, it is more like c---roach eats c---roach!

Service sector employees are becoming like c---roaches in market, disrupting other jobs and poisoning it.my advice is keep away from oilworkers especially managers.

You will find job just hang on little bit more.

Your manager cannot give you a work reference. All they can give you is a personal reference. If you are not friends with your manager then do not use them as a personal reference. Remember you are not allowed to give out the names or contact details of any Schlumberger employee when you work for or have left the company.

All Schlumberger will give out (via HR) will be a reference saying the dates of your employment, last position and if you are eligible for re-hire.

As has been said if you are sure you manager has been giving you an unreasonable reference then you can start legal action against them. If you believe he fired you unfairly you can also report this to the ethics line.

FYI - @lbu did not put in a smiley emoji. He/She used a 'crying emoji' so no need to get hostile here - it was an appropriate to do - it expresses sadness.

This kind of thing doesn't surprise anyone in the oil service business. Dog eat dog environment, dishonesty, vengeful and lazy, aggressive people brought up in rough neighbourhoods.......this is what you get. The only way to survive is to be like them or leave.

i am sorry to hear so. there are several potential solutions to this, i will try to list a few. mix and match as you feel.

1 - if you are in Europe or US, and can document him doing this to you (for instance, email feedback from potential employer suggesting your former managers recommendations etc.) you should immediately report to the employment tribunal or a similar body.

2 - the potential new employer has no right to demand specific references, you should be able to decide, so pick 2 or 3 people that are more reliable (for instance another manager, a peer, a client, a former professor etc)

3 - you are also entitled to receive a letter of service / reference from HR, which would detail basic information as hire date, tenure, assignments etc. request it so that you don't have to rely on a former manager to confirm employment.

4 - speak to a lawyer, see if a potential harassment case can be filed or at least a letter to the manager with copy to HR can be sent.

all the very best mate.
