Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Disturbing trend

Yes it is true, there is a list! Managers are being coached weekly to complete the process. Many of the "managed out" employees have been "TARGETED" due to age and years of service; however it is being balanced out with a few token younger team members to avoid age discrimination. Target is very clever to avoid law suits...maybe this effort of perfection should have been used to keep Target more competitive instead. The percentage of 60+ year old employees with 30+ years of employment are are being managed out is very high. This is a silent layoff with a majority being a targeted group of people. Since this is not an official layoff, statistical data does not need to be provided or made public, Target has provided a few team members with small token packages to keep them from discussions and unifying any public declarations.

Generational diversity will soon be extinct at Target.

Performance issues do exists and need to be addressed; however "managing out" is not the ethical solution for the majority of these people; many were setup by being placed and promoted into positions without the skills and aptitude to succeed. An early retirement package offering would have been the more respectful option.

This is very disturbing for all.

Target has two groups of people one is hardworking & highly technical and another is a highly political managers & directors. The political group survive because of their highly advanced manipulative techniques. They are experts in managing hardworking technical folks out.

Large companies like Enron collapsed due to the bad politics. I think the new Target leadership has been on a cleanup mission by getting rid of political managers replacing with experienced technical managers from the outside but I sure it is not easy.

I've worked for several corporations in my career so I've seen all kinds of styles. (Full disclosure: Am 41, left Target in my mid-30's)

Even as a hire in my 30's, facing no age-related discrimination, it was clear to me that Target was an ageist environment. Constantly seeing the older people being managed out. To the extent that I joked about it being Logans Run.

They are BEGGING for a lawsuit, or some kind of justice department action. It's been going on for years and they're almost blatant about it. Somebody brave enough should try and collect evidence if they can and get it to a lawyer after they quit (or are let go)

If you honestly don't think older people are being targeted....you are in denial! If you are over 40, this is you! This is not something new, it has been happening for years. It just happens to be more targeted at the moment. It doesn't matter if you are a top employee or a slacker.....its all about the money! New hires are cheaper!

To the person wanting people to contact you to discuss the situation, that's probably not going to happen. Many people are being asked to sign a separation agreement meaning they cannot say anything disparaging about Target and cannot discuss any package details if they were the few to get a package. Target is going through with this "managing out" process because it IS a targeted group of people over 50. Most of the people I know are also female. Target cannot go through with a lay-off because the ages, tenures, and s-x of the people would clearly prove a discriminatory act. Managing out people however, Target does not have to provide any documents to the government. It's a slippery slope. They are verbally eviscerating people and making them feel hopeless and worthless. I know two people who are on disability leaves right now because of the stress this has caused them. Many more are extremely depressed and undergoing therapy. I wonder if someone winds up doing harm to themselves over this, would Target think better of this?

Maybe a few people at Tgt understand the pain and care what some go through and clearly, as evidenced by some of these responses, some prefer to mock others, make snide comments and lack empathy. I see now that in a forum such as this no one really knows who to trust, just like in the work place (ie, TTS as someone replied). I would like to share stories with others who feel wronged due to age or other discrimination, maybe people who no longer are at Target would be willing to talk to me as they wouldn't fear repercussion. Perhaps if you know of someone they could reach out to me? Why bother posting information and starting a thread such as this (Disturbing Trend) if no one is willing to fight it. Well, I might. Help if you want, but stop with the negative comments if you have a heart. This situation might be yours later in your career with Target or some other corporation.

Haha it's like the time someone from HR came on here and said they had everyones IP addresses. Of course when asked to produce said IP they suddenly went away.

TGT spends way too much on legal and hr. Don't fall for their tricks. Now if only TGT had the same passion for stocking shelves as they did legal compliance.....

This is to the earlier poster 1crg - I call him "little limpy" - he is so easy to identify because his only input is to trash other posters...sad

I'm in my 40's and in my 1st 1-1 with my new manager was asked what I planned to do in retirement. Seriously.

To 1crg: Well I can say for certain it is very true. I was 55 and was targeted. Actually had a boss who I respected that let me know so I could plan ahead. The list is real and it does not matter how good your past review were. They give you 6 weeks to "retrain" to a new skill and if you don't meet their expectations, your gone one way or another. I was in EDABI

To the trolls out there just trying to start fights, go somewhere else. This is a board for people to share information on layoffs happening. If you actually worked at Target and are being impacted or know someone who is, you'd have a different tune.

This is a sad situation in deed. I am aware of some affected people who are undergoing such stress they are becoming ill. Couldn't this be done in a more humane way? Causing people to be so stressed out and depressed and have such high self-doubt is not necessary. If you want to thin out staff, just do a lay-off.

It isn't necessary to call someone a "wing nut". I know several people who are being managed out and they are all really good people with stellar work history. All over 50 also.

Skip the personal attacks when trying to prove your hyperbole eh. FYI 40++ is over 50. 40+ is 40 to 50....

This is true and the targeted group happens to be over 50. To all the arrogant 40+ year olds (looking at you @OxpejTs-1bhe) this will happen to you in a few years. Maybe trying to be more empathetic about a very unfair situation would do you well in the future. The people that I know that have been managed out are intelligent, hard working, and loyal employees.

Look, Grind your axe.... go to ANY pyramid meeting in merchandising, finance, Real Estate and you'll find happy well tenured 40 ++ year olds, hundreds of them. Your being targeted because you're a wing nut.

Signed, Well over 40

This has been happening for years at Target. Clearly @oxpejTs-zff hasn't turned 40 yet. New hires are lower on the pay scale... everyone is replaceable. Not just Target, true at any a major corporation with money to burn on HR consultants.
