The Boss Wants You Back in the Office!

Big businesses have embraced flexible work practices, but fewer of them seem to favor full-time working from home.

Good luck hiring a "software multiplier with rare talents" with this rule in place. Honeywell is too dumb, slow, and inflexible to know how to win. Yahoo! was a Silicon Valley laughing stock when implementing this same policy.

Getting where we are with people on same program scattered across global time zones and perhaps a prog mgr somewhere else completely - pacific island, Mars, was done solely to cut the short term lanor expense. DC didnt give rat's a.. if it made sense. Now he has 1 billion and is on his own island. It is up to new guy to piece it back together, if he wants too.

It's clear that those at Honeywell in management positions who appreciate the lean value of co-located work groups has been let go. The degree of difficulty in getting anything done with a program manager in Florida, an AME engineer in Phoenix, a commodity manager in India and design people in Mexico is astounding, compared to walking down the hall to talk to any of these people, as it was not so long ago.

The "work in the office" mandate is an HR driven mandate applied to individuals. Honeywell (at least Aerospace) leadership however prefers people working on projects together not be co-located. The glaring example is project management staff is in the US, while product engineering, development and manufacturing is spread across the globe.

Perhaps if Honeywell applied this "work at home" idea in a broader sense, and had everyone involved in a product life-cycle working in the same location, they could deliver a better product than their competitors, shorten development cycles and probably save some money.

I'm ok with flexible! Honeywell's new stance is not flexible at all! Come in the office every single day (regardless of the fact that your entire team is spread out across the globe and you never see them anyway), or else! stupid stupid stupid
